Been to this location quite a few times, and each time is a great experience ordering the Trust Me's. Sushi is always fresh and flavors don't disappoint. The dining experience can be intimate (tight) as there is little space in between each table. Servers will bring out each dish individually, sort of omakase style. We've switched over to take out since the pandemic. The to go packaging is very impressive, everything is organized and labeled. I actually prefer take out since you can get all the dishes at the same time and eat at your own pace. Also, if you order their Trust Me's on two separate visits per year, you can redeem a free order on your birthday. Take outs count too, just make sure...
I had the honor to have been served by the founder Nozawa-San in Studio City sometime in the 90's.This latest restaurant is quite noisy, very busy, and serves high-quality Sushi in a formatted easy to order way. It's a place to bring friends or lovers for a quick lunch or dinner. Service was excellent and friendly and the food was served promptly in a continuous manner.They do not serve Hot Sake, or large Beers, so there are some limitations in a variety of ways. Looking for great atmosphere for a intimate romantic evening? This is not the place. Want to hang with your Buds for an hour and eat with lots of background loud chatter? This is the place.
Took the family out for some sushi, menu is fine and food was ok but not kid friendly at all, a tiny plate of rice for kids? Ridiculous. First plate of food was tiny pieces of tuna that looked like something you’d feed a cat. Most of the fish seemed fresh with the exception of a couple that weren’t. Rice fell apart on EVERY piece of sushi, frustrating to eat. Was seated near the entrance where the employees were chatting about their life problems. 15% gratuity automatically added, not deserved. Won’t be going back.
It's difficult to fault Sugarfish; either you’re on board with the concept or it can be quite overwhelming. My personal rule is that if someone else is paying, I’m happy to join! One great feature of the Pasadena location is that you can order to go and enjoy your meal in the courtyard without having to wait. I’m giving it four stars instead of five because they use way too much sauce on the sushi, which overshadows the flavor of the fresh fish. The pieces I enjoyed the most were those with little to no seasoning. Also, be sure to make a reservation. As you might know, Sugarfish is very popular. We went on a Friday night and ended up waiting over an hour for a table, which felt pretty foolish.
This was my second visit to this location. Was to celebrate my friend's birthday. I ordered the Trust Me Nozawa set, which had variety of rolls and also sashimi. The quality and freshness of the fish was great. My issue was the rice. It was still warm and not compacted enough so when picking up the nigiri the rice fell apart. Also the first dish of sashimi with ponzu, too much ponzu.
I've ordered takeout from Sugar Fish several times, and I've consistently found the quality to be great. It's easy to grab when I'm in the mood for sushi. The prices are reasonable, and the takeout box offers a good value when shared between two people. It's a delicious pick-me-up!

Very fresh fish at an intermediate price, and in my opinion a great compromise between casual sushi and high-end omakase that could cost 100+ per person and take hours. Would go again.Food: 4/5
