We often dine at the Barre before theatre. For a short while they have a long-grain inspired menu. This shouldn't make a difference but last night, there was not one table around us that didn't have a problem with the food or the service.We ordered sparkling mineral water - we got still.We ordered two glasses of rose - we got sav. blanc.Our meals were so slow coming (three entrees) we were offered free coffees.We ordered a bowl of chips because we were still hungry (read below) and they were so cold when they were delivered (see below) we asked for them to be replaced.The items on the menu are interesting, but we didn't go to that restaurant for a thai-inspired snack - we went (as we usually...
We used to eat at The Barre's previous incarnation which was known as Curve Bar but this was our first visit to the new operator who seems to be the Art Center itself. This is definitely a case of location, location, location. Having a place to eat only steps away from the performance venues at the Arts Center gives this restaurant an enormous advantage and also a captive audience. The place was super full when we visited it. The seating arrangements have changed from the days of Curve Bar but there are still some uncomfortable chairs that look more like bar stools; this probably helps increase turnover no doubt. The great thing about The Barre is that if you are attending a performance at the arts centre you can eat and/or have a drink pre or post the performance in situ. We were placed in an alcove rather than in the main restaurant section which was great. Very quick service. A menu that caters for nibbles, a snack or a full meal. We shared a charcuterie plate, torn peach salad & a Turkish bread plate followed by donuts leisurely within an hour.
We really enjoyed sitting at a table in chairs with excellent innovative food being served. It is much better than the Curve Bar format formerly there. The wine list was good and the choices on the menu were wonderful. My calamari with heirloom tomatoes was terrific as was the Cos salad to share. Lovely looking cafe and that's about the best of it! We went in and were told they had one choice for dessert so we should go to another cafe we were a bit bemused went to look and found it closed. We wouldn't have come back but nothing else in the vicinity coffee was ok! Wouldn't go out of my way again, staff were not welcoming! Dessert was less than average at $15 for a Pavlova with Nutella on top.
Although there was not enough seating (although there is always seating for one). It's good to get there early before you see a show. The food was great, and not over pricey. the cocktail was delicious and despite the frantic business of the place pre show the staff were friendly and helpful. Awesome wine list.
The Barre is perfectly placed in the Arts Centre complex so you can enjoys a really good quality meal before you go into your show. The Arts Centre is a buzz with lots of different shows to choose from.Parking is easy , right under the building.Good bar service and very tasty food , do try it
Had a quick bite here before seeing Carmen. Very interesting selection of food and drinks. Excellent service.The Barre is a good choice for a relaxed bite to eat before your evening's entertainment at the Arts Centre precinct. Varied selection of small plates makes it ideal for sharing. This restaurant should be better than what we had 2 days ago. It wasn't bad. But in the circumstances of an upmarket place at the Arts Centre the discriminating consumers could expect better. Maybe our choices weren't the best. Worth another try
