Dont know where to start as Christmas Day here was a complete let down and just awful. Half a bowl of lentil soup which wasnt cooked through as veg and lentils were still hard and no seasoning, just tasted like the water which lentils had been drained in. Starters were ok but nothing to write home about. Was hardly worth bothering with lemon sorbet as scoop was so small. Mains were not great at all. Veg were hard, roasted potatoes were either Aunt Bessie type frozen versions or some which had been pre-cooked days ago and re-heated. Bigs in blankets were reheated. This was my first visit back to the Canny Man in 5 years. I used to love the food, the decor and the atmosphere however I was shocked arriving tonight for dinner. The restaurant was freezing cold, me and my partner kept our jackets on throughout the meal. We had chicken tempura to start which was basically all batter and no chicken for £7.50. I then had the steak pie and years ago I would have told anyone that the canny man steak pie was the best steak pie I’d ever tasted but I was highly disappointed. We used to come here regularly when it was The Canny Man and the Paraffin Lamp before that. First time we came when it changed to Padaro, the food was pretty non descript so we thought we would give it a second chance. How disappointing! There was practically no one in, which should have been an indicator, but the waiter took over 20 minutes to come and ask us if we wanted a drink. Having seen this place change hands for years we were so hopeful and looking forward to see if it had returned to former glory. It hadn’t Possibly worst meal for a long time and I had to drive 20 minutes to get there. Decor underwhelming. Atmosphere none. After reading some reviews four of the work colleagues decided to go to The Canny Man for a dinner on a Friday evening in mid June 2023. We were greeted in a nice way by staff and after a while ordered four steak pies. Our meals arrived in about 10 minutes which was super suspicious. The pastry looked like a crispy morning roll and tasted bland. The meat was pale, gravy was watery. Mash potatoes looks as if they were on the plate since the morning with a dry film all around. Root vegetables on the side were the only good thing about the meal. I’ve read many great reviews about the place before but never been there. We were all deeply disappointed and will not go back for a meal
We visited for a family meal and we have to say from start to finish the service and food where amazing. After reading a couple of reviews we decided to try again as we haven’t been since the new name. We were not disappointed the staff are so friendly , the service was prompt and the food was delicious and hot. We where told they have new chefs and I have to say you won’t be disappointed if you try this little treasure .
Been going here for years and stopped by this week for a bowl of soup and a pint. Two bowls or soup, half a sandwich and two pints. Total bill £31!! When we queried it we were told the prices have gone up. Yep we were charged £7 per pint!!!! Food was really excellent…. Canny Man, Parafin Lamp, Padaro …..and whatever you’ll Be called next it’s been a blast. We’ll sadly not be back.
This has changed hands a number of times and frankly, I was put off on my last visit to the Paraffin Lamp. I went with a friend to what is now called the Padaro and I am so glad I did. There was just two of us at an early lunch and we were welcomed. The food was just a little bit different and enjoyable. The service was good and the décor modern and fresh . I will go again. The Canny Man. Jeez. Went for breakfast with Santa. Been in previous years and it was great. Unfortunately, this year was a shocker. Glow in the dark square sausage, stale rolls, undercooked bacon, a cold restaurant, tea/coffee in paper cups, sticky tables and a Santa more fake than a tiktoker's tan. Avoid
