The title is the best thing you can say about this hotel..it is at least there. Every image you see on the site here is false. basically it is on its knees, there is no food (apart from biscuits with the tea). I do feel sorry for them in many ways but all you see is not right. I see one review saying Great Hidden Gem? Well, its still hidden. Think 80's down at heal but in 2021 and you've got it. The bar has a nice young man serving, but it really is a place to walk in and walk out of. For us bikers on a wet night it was ok, but if you'd arrived thinking of a nice quaint hotel, you'd be guttted.
Hubby and I popped in here as we were starving hungry. Place was deserted and we did wonder if it was an omen. Couldn't have been further from the truth. We both decided on curry. We sat at a lovely table in the window and watched the world go by whilst we waited. When the good arrived, it was piping hot. There was a decent serving of curry, rice and chips. Plus a poppadom and a naan each, together with mango chutney and the lovely yoghurty sauce. It tasted gorgeous and was very filling. And a good price at £7.50 per head. Much enjoyed.
We ate in the Castle because my friends wanted to have lunch somewhere that had a licence. We all chose fish and chips. There was a wait, because the beer batter for the fish had to be freshly made, but this was apologised for in advance. My friends complained that the bottom of their fish batter was soggy, but mine was fine. The service was friendly and helpful, the room rather dark and unloved. I don't think the present owners have been there very long, and I assume that things will get better with time.
We ordered three pizzas and two sides on a Friday evening. Pizza prices are between £9 and £10 each and includes local delivery. Sides are priced between £2 and £4. Excellent service. Delivery was on time and the food was hot. All pizzas are on 12” thin bases. The Castle Hotel offers this special service to the local community during lockdown while the pub itself and restaurant is closed. We will definitely order delivered pizzas from the Castle again.

On entering the building, the first impression is that it looked as it needs a good makeover. The whole place appears tired and in need of repair and decoration. The staff were friendly and said that they were waiting for some contractors to move in and overhaul the place I hope that this happens sooner rather than later as, being centralised in the High Street, it should be one of the main paces to which both locals and travellers would want to go to.
Friendly staff, good menu and reasonably priced, but we waited 20 minutes for the food to come, only to find out 2 out of the 4 of us that the order was unavailable, a 2nd choice was made and a further 20 minutes later the food arrived. The excuse was that everything is cooked to order....! Food although very hot was barely average..... homemade chips were excellent!
Tried the new carvery. The food average. The chicken just needed something! The vegetables- self service were ok. The parsnips needed cooking. So cannot recommend as the new place to go. Maybe early days. The sweet a crumble was just stodgy Will try again in s few months. Maybe worth a try.
Above average budget food, Really pleasant staff ,good attentive service Basic pub grub really at elevated prices though. The food was acceptable enough but the premises felt a little dingy and aged but not too off putting

At £40 a night this was good value for money. At this price don't expect to be in the lap of luxury. It's comfortable but it's a little tired. Ideal for our motorcycle trip though.
