This was the best pub in London, by some distance: the easy, friendly, atmosphere of a proper country' pub; a great selection of beer and wine; tasty, well-prepared food; chatty and efficient staff; all this, coupled with the fantastic location of Wimbledon Common, made for a winning combination. The pub closed for refurbishment in Summer 2014 and I only hope that the atmosphere which made the Crooked Billet so welcoming won't have been destroyed. It would be a great tragedy if another proper pub were turned into the sort of identikit, bland, and soulless bar that seems to infest most of the rest of London we will see in September 2014, when the pub reopens November 2014:...read more
So. the crooked billet is much bigger than it looks from outside with a restaurant area on the back. it is not a gastro-sub as they can say from the menu. eating is quite simple and too expensive for what it is. I guess this is the cure for the opposite, but close to £30 for a pretty fat lamb and a few glasses wein it was too rich for me.
a nice light lunch by haddock soft and simply perfectly cooked, triple dipped chips, muddy heaps (one because I would like to eat British mushy) and a bottle of ice cold beer (sorry i detest tap every description) everyone who only rounded it. another pleasant lunch without the rain.
We were warmly welcomed, despite arriving late due to traffic. The atmosphere and staff were both delightful. Our party of 7, with members of different ages, received excellent service and food. We will definitely be returning. 5 stars all around!
great eating and for a change, a sort for the vegetarian as well. ambiente is in order, but they have a big raving front with simple chairs and that makes for a perfect post-lunch her spot. here along a sunny day
Location i a 5, but the food can sometimes be better. Stay a way from the hummus, think it was homemade, lacked flavour was disappointing, but great atmosphere and we visit regularly.
good pub with friendly staff and dog biscuits for my mut. well cooked eating and decent selection of beer with access to common at a beautiful sunny day
Went for roast dinner today at the crooked billet had the sharing for two is was the best lamb shoulder ever I highly recommend I will be back….
Fantastic location and great food. The staff were so friendly. The icing on the cake was the presence of dogs, all well behaved and sociable.
