My husband and I, with another couple, came here for Sunday lunch. It was very busy but staff nonetheless took the time to be friendly and helpful to us throughout, despite clearly being rushed off their feet! There was a good choice of both roasts and other mains; we all went for roast, having beef, pork and the chicken roast of the day between us. These were all excellent and generous portion sizes to say the least; we also shared cauliflower cheese (ok) and stuffing (superb) between us. Vegetables were cabbage and roasted carrots and parsnips, all beautifully cooked. We were already fairly full but the choice of desserts was too tempting! Apple crumble turned out to be the poorest choice...
We have broken the Duke of Wellington as the food went down in our region after a large pubco chain was taken over. We may be relieved that a decent gastro pig remains in our neighborhood! We had a number of meals here with different menus and still have a great disappointment to experience (Salted Caramel Tart was an experience that we did not repeat, but otherwise the food and service was perfect.
An excellent old guest house of 1561, which includes a part of a curious old toll station on a corner. It has been expanded and updated, but still manages to offer some attractive curiosity and charm. Excellent food and a good selection of beer. Many seats inside and outside to enjoy a summer evening. Friendly staff and interesting chats with locals.
