I don't usually like to make negative posts but felt compelled to as I went out of my way to find an awesome Rueben. The corned beef was mostly fat and gristle and was a very light pinkish color with an orange sheen on it that made it look as if it was spoiled. I could not chew it and once I examined the beef, it was all over for me. The photos you see online show a piled high sandwich of fresh looking meat and looked like brisket. The meat I got was definitely of the lowest quality. It looked great at first until I tried to take a bite and nearly all of the meat came out on my plate because it was just a pile of fat. 8/10/24 I gave this latest review a lot of thought... it's really a shame when a place deteriorates and goes downhill! I stopped in today for what used to be my favorite...Chunky Whitefish Salad on a bagel etc. Let me start with the stale bagel! I had noticed on previous visits that the included side had shrunk 50%, but today was the worst! For $19.95 the portion of Chunky(NOT) Whitefish was pathetic! See photo on Yelp! Based upon this experience and that I was the only patron... I doubt they will be around much longer! Today was my last visit and I will share today's experience with my local clientele!
What a find! We were in for the weekend and introduced our family to this gem. Huuuge portions for breakfast that are great quality. We took home pastries for later. You don’t have to be Jewish to love this place. Down to earth people and atmosphere. The server has been there for years and thank goodness did not throw my boy’s toy away when he left it on the table when we went back to get it. Just a great family environment. Thank you guys for treating our family so nice!
2nd back within the last couple weeks. Got the delicious corned beef on rye with deli mustard last week and went back today for a pastrami on rye both melt in your mouth. Yes, might be on the pricier side of things, HOWEVER, they are big portions and it’s quality. And don’t forget the pickle bar! Great and friendly service too! Brought it back to the office and people were around my desk, jealous, asking where I got my pastrami from. I had to shoo them away!

The Essen Room is the closest you will come to a New York (kosher style) Jewish Deli restaurant in Baltimore. Sandwich sizes are humongous (I had the beef tongue and it melted in my mouth) and they have a huge selection of pastries. Their hamentashen are the sizes of footballs I have never seen that before! When you go, be prepared to pay New York prices, however...
A true deli experience. Really good food in a fun relaxed atmosphere. Also, this place is very clean. Portions are huge. Seriously, a half sandwich is plenty for the two of us. The potato pancake tastes like my childhood. So yum! You should go, eat and enjoy! And don't miss out on the pickle bar!
We love Essen! Absolutely great food and amazing service. We are from Texas and every time we find ourselves in Maryland we come to eat at Essen! REAL Jewish deli food! Make sure to get dessert! We love the owner and all of the servers.
The pastrami Reuben was warm and moist. Simply delicious. The complementary pickle bar was a nice surprise. There was an unusual surge of customers and our waiter, Ray, handled it well by himself. Very professional and congenial.

Delicious corned beef, chopped liver. Service is another story. They need more help.
Great food. A little high priced. Drove from WV and we will be back.
