As for the room, we got a fantastic one overlooking the entrance, providing a lovely view. The size was larger than expected, and the thoughtful extras like a heated towel rack and bathrobes were a nice touch. Now, regarding transportation, it was straightforward. We didn’t have a car, but... 1. A short taxi ride to Sawbridgeworth Train Station cost about $13 USD each way. 2. A Day Pass for the overground/train, the underground (The Tube), and buses was around $40 USD per person per day. Transportation runs until midnight every night and was surprisingly convenient, aside from a three-hour delay one evening due to a train breakdown. Well situated from London and a short drive from the station, I had the privilege of staying here recently. It is a very nice hotel, beautifully styled, with lovely spaces. It also has large grounds to explore. The only thing I query is the £30 admission price for the spa. On the plus side having a specific timeslot means that you may find yourself with the entire space to yourself. The spa comprises of a large whirlpool and a steam room and sauna. There is also a relaxation room with some adjustable heated beds and sun loungers outside. We didn't have any treatments, but is the spa worth £30? Personally I think not, especially as the heated beds would not heat up, the reading lamps on each...

Decided to ignore the negative reviews and give it a try for a catch-up meal with my daughter, we should have avoided as the meal was ruined by poor service. Menu was very limited. The restaurant was only a third full. The waitress seated us then completely ignored us for about 10 minutes. Had to ask if we could order our drinks, bread basket and main meals. Bread came fast but drinks took about 10 mins to arrive and the food service took about 30 mins, which is far too long. They served my daughter the wrong meal, took 10-15 mins to replace with what she had ordered by which time I had finished my meal. We stayed at Down Hall with my family and dined at The Grill twice. The food was wonderful—so much so that we ended up ordering the same starters on our second night because they were irresistible. The service was outstanding, and the gentleman who recommended the wines was incredibly attentive, even recalling our selections the following evening. Overall, it was a delightful experience.
