I had seen The Host from the freeway, tucked in behind the car wash & the Brazilian waxing place, and assumed that it wouldn't be much good. After a couple of years, we gave it a try, and were very pleasantly surprised & have since been back a couple of times. Don't be put off by the warehouse exterior or the surroundings, inside is a comfortable white cloth restaurant, run by lovely Indian people with authentic food in a very welcoming atmosphere. The first time we went, there was some sort of function on, full of Indian people in traditional costume - presumably some sort of family celebration within the community, but they made us welcome anyway. We got here for a family dinner. The ambience and decor was pleasing. The service staff was helpful and accommodating. However the main concern is the food. Gobi manchurian tasted like battered cauliflower in tomato ketchup and seasoning. There were no chopped capsicum, onions, scallions as there would usually be in this dish. The mixed tandoori platter had dry chicken pieces already tandoored and microwaved. Nothing wrong with the marination but the technique adopted was shortcut. The chef came out and apologised but also tried to justify that he's has had compliments from another big table that the food was fantastic and apparently that table had Indian chefs. This part of Melbourne lacks restaurants with a bit of style that dont have poker machines and poor service.The Host is almost hard to find and alrhough I'd driven past it lots of times I'd thought to myself 'why would they have seruously good Induan food here?' and I never bothered.An impromptu visit recently was a great surprise. The vast majority of patrons were of Indian decent and the atmosphere was just terrific. Service was friendly and prompt and the Indian beers available went down well too.The food was a delight. Seriously well prepared and delicately spiced, it didnt take hours to reach the table and was first class. Look forward to a return visit.
We tried this restaurant while staying nearby and had a great time. The restaurant is now called Dhaba by Aangan and the website link on Tripadvisor was incorrect at the time of our visit. The food was delicious with a wide variety of vegetarian and meat dishes, along with great service and reasonably priced drinks. We recommend trying their special cocktails. The portions were generous, with appetizers more like main courses, so sharing might be a good idea. We each had an appetizer, main course with rice and naan, but it was too much food to finish. We visited this restaurant on New Years Eve (2015) there was nothing to complain about, the food was awesome, the wait staff were attentive and helpful, the prices are on par with other Indian restaurants and the serves are large, we did not have to have dessert.we left feeling very full and happy that we had an awesome experience, a must to have a meal here.
I went with a group of 8 people and received great, fast service at this restaurant. The food options ranged from mild to very spicy, satisfying all tastes. We enjoyed our meal and drinks, and were pleasantly surprised by the low bill of $330, which comes out to only $40 per person. This is a great spot for groups, families, and couples.
Tasty Indian food and lots of variety. Our family and friends enjoyed a fixed menu and there was plenty of variety and generous serves of food. Need a car to get there as it is not in centre of Melbourne
