My Wife and I took close friends for brunch and felt quite embarrassed afterwards to think that we had suggested we go there based on its reviews. The service was terrible and all in perfect view of the owners Wife who spent the entire time offering two wealthy clients her wine suggestions. We should probably have left when the coffee finally arrived with the cream that was sour. Next we waited forever to get new coffee and then again to order. After all of this we got a second waitress that made the 1st one almost look good. She never did bring the drinks we ordered and between the two of them they finally dragged the food over. We thought it couldn't get any worst until we asked for salt,...
Friends who live in North Van had spoken many times of The Portly Chef with high praise. Last weekend while visiting them from Victoria I was able to experience the restaurant for myself. I haven't stopped talking about our meal! Every course (and yes we went for the gusto) was absolutely amazing to say the least. The escargot dish which I ordered for an appetizer was beyond compare to anything I've ever had!! My main dish choice was the Pork Loin which was done to perfection. And if you like deserts, well you are in for a true experience. For me it was the Black Current Creme Brulee and it too scored 100%. One of THE BEST dining experiences I've had with every course being perfectly present...
Another outstanding evening at The Portly Chef. I think this is our third or fourth Valentine's Day dinner here and they have never disappointed us, as many restaurants have on this busy day. We were seated promptly and kept amused right from the start by our charming waiter. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. It felt a little like eating a great meal at your best friend's house (if your best friend is a top chef). Thanks again for making our evening special! Rob and Jill
This place came highly recommended from people at work.We had the bone marrow bruschetta for starters and its was sumptuous and rich which paired nicely with the spanish blend red wine we have.I had the Halibut which was quite generous in serving - very tender with such juiciness very difficult to balance in a kind of fish like this.Dessert had creme brûlée - excellent. Amazing food and such great owners and staff! Thanks Emily for making our evening Saturday night! We had a fantastic meal and your compassion for what you do shows in how you treat everyone who walks in like old friends! We will be back next time I come for a visit at the end of August!
Food was absolutely amazing! The Pork belly and scallops appetizer was phenomenal, the sable fish main course was by far the best I have ever tasted! Atmosphere was great- sat on the patio which was excellent! Our server Gavin was top shelf! Will definitely be back!!
I love really good food! Was going to leave it at that, but will mention our server was also excellent. Wonderful experience! But honestly, the chef isn't as portly as expected. Lol!
