After hiking from Bowness to the Black Labrador, we were looking forward to a break and some refreshments. However, we were very disappointed to find a 'no muddy boots' sign on the front door. Feeling embarrassed, we turned around and walked past the patrons inside. It's unfortunate because the restaurant looked charming. We decided to continue on to Kendal where we found excellent food, drinks, and service at another restaurant.
The Black Labrador is a popular lovely old village pub with a smart modern extension. Nothing seems to much trouble for the lovely friendly staff. The food is exceptional, a great menu cooked to a high standard. The portions are eye popping and on our two visits failed to manage attempting a desert after a starter and main. This pub is well worth a visit and if I was local I would be a regular.
I decided to try this restaurant after seeing it on Trip Advisor. I had a feeling it was going to be good when they brought us ice-cold water before we even sat down. The cauliflower in tempura was just perfect, the fries were nice and crispy, and the ham in a fresh bun with homemade piccalilli was delicious. The burger was also spot on. I will definitely be coming back again.
This restaurant is a hidden gem! We had the best meal we've ever had in Cumbria. The dining room is beautiful and modern, with a fantastic menu. The food was top-notch, especially the belly pork. The service was great, the staff were friendly, and it was excellent value for money. We had a perfect evening and would highly recommend this restaurant. Five stars! Reserviere jetzt einen Tisch
We made a special trip to the pub whilst we were honeymooning in the lakes, and we are so glad we did. Had a lovely family meal, two adults one baby and one black lab. Gorgeous pub, lovely staff and the food is to die for. Will definitely be returning next time we’re in the lakes.
Returned to the Black Labrador after a superb visit last year. Happy to find it was unchanged. Lovely, welcoming staff and excellent food. We love this place and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
Lovely restaurant off the beaten path in Underbarrow. Had a lovely family dinner for my birthday. Food was generally well executed although the batter on my father’s fish was slightly soggy.
