The Village Tavern

I had never been here before and had zero expectations was just looking for a nice meal after a lovely day out. This restaurant really took the wind out of my sails. The whole restaurant had an odd prevailing odor in it. Everything had an inch of dust on it. The carpet is grungy, and theres dust shields over the ceiling vents to catch the dust that falls out of the vents. The food was extremely underwhelming. Bland and greasy sums it up best. The prices were good for the quality of food so it's a good value at least. The staff was attentive and friendly. But its just so hard to get past the smell and lack of cleanliness of this place. Since it was a relatively quick ride on the train north of Chicago, I had to visit the oldest restaurant in Illinois. I really enjoyed the history and ambiance. The food leans toward the area's German heritage, and is well executed.
