I rarely give below 5 stars, and we honestly loved everything about this place except for our service staff. The food was delicious, it was our first time and honestly the specialty chocolate bacon bbq burger for chocolate festival was awesome. I loved it. The kids ate all their kids meals and didn 't even complain once! It was truly great. The atmosphere is great and the decor is awesome. Keeping true to the original history. Really loved the history on the menus to talk to the kids about it. It was fun to talk about covered wagons! I was really disappointed in our server. After we ordered drinks my 5 yo jokingly asked our server So, when is the lemonade going to be here? Also, for referenc...

I wish I could give 0 stars for the experience my family and I had. We were so excited to try the Strawberry Fest specials yesterday when we came in for lunch. There were two tables in front and behind us that came in ten minutes after we sat down, and we were the only African American family in the establishment. The waiter we had managed to take their food order, give them their food, and give them their checks to go before we got our food. He checked on every other table, and we had to flag the waiter down to check on us just to receive water and drinks. Came here for dinner with my wife and kids while we were in the area and had a great meal. I got the German platter with potato salad and sauerkrat. My wife got the broasted chicken sandwich. The kids got a burger, mac n cheese, and grilled cheese. If you love German food, the German platter is what to get. The potato salad was delicious. Mix that with a delicious bratwurst and Thuringer sausage and perfectly tangy sauerkraut, and my stomach was happy. My wife loved how tender, moist and flavorful the broasted chicken was and I didn 't hear any complaints from the kids. I had never been here before and had zero expectations was just looking for a nice meal after a lovely day out. This restaurant really took the wind out of my sails. The whole restaurant had an odd prevailing odor in it. Everything had an inch of dust on it. The carpet is grungy, and theres dust shields over the ceiling vents to catch the dust that falls out of the vents. The food was extremely underwhelming. Bland and greasy sums it up best. Since it was a relatively quick ride on the train north of Chicago, I had to visit the oldest restaurant in Illinois. I really enjoyed the history and ambiance. The food leans toward the area's German heritage, and is well executed.
The Village Tavern is truly a gem! We loved our experience here. The food, service, history, atmosphere…it was all excellent. We also loved the location and walking around the village of Long Grove.
