Having grown up in the North East of England and been aware of the Tyneside Cinema as a kind of retro place where film buffs would to go to watch cult movies in the 80s and 90s, I was most interested to see it on Happy Cow. Only a few years ago the cinema was very close to extinction. Now, it's a thriving heartbeat of a place where people who would like to think they are cool want to be seen. Having read the previous reviews I knew vegan options would be limited but was going to get the roasted vegetable wrap but it wasn't on the menu when I went mid-week. Vegan options are limited to almond porridge (at any time of the day), Asian salad with tofu and tofu scramble but when I went they'd run out of tofu. The salad was also expensive. There's also a fruit smoothie and juice of the day. Strangely, they have beetroot falafel on the menu but it's vegetarian, not vegan. The regular bread isn't vegan although I think the sourdough is. I went here with two friends, we ordered the sincere dog that sounded lovely. we were told about a fact that they had no vegan breadcakes and asked if that was okay. we were not sure if they don't offer us vegan breadcakes or tell us we couldn't have a brot. we still ordered the hot dogs without buns. they were ok- mushier and less cheerful than anyone I had before. we had to pay the same amount and were not offered alternatives to rolls. I don't think I'd go back here.
This cafe always had a vegan option in the mains but I went the other day and there wasn't one ( Very disappointed, all there seemed to be was a salad and the soup of the day soup was very nice in all fairness but it isn't really the best for an evening meal, especially since there always has been a vegan main whyyyyy Tyneside

As indicated this is to flag recent changes and updates to menu which has undergone definite leap in vegan options. Added photos to menus. Now has super salad, seitan hot dog and fries and more, also had a vegan sticky toffee pudding. The venue is always special place, now with range of vegan options even better.
my partner and I went here for vegan afternoon tea. that was a tasty bite for me, because I couldn't have had a afternoon. the tens were very sweet. I would recommend to contact in advance to find out what they offer (change tea menus in the afternoon) and make a reservation
... as well as friendly and helpful service. all meals and even drinks are referred to as vegan if necessary. we had a hotdog since then and a bean-tale-wagout that surpassed our expectations. most beers are vegan, come from local and international breweries.
Baffled that an arts menu has such a poor choice of vegetarian food. The venue is good but all there was on the menu for vegans during a February snowstorm was a salad for £9.50. Updated July 2018 to say they listened and now have far better vegan options!

Nice place with a good atmosphere but limited vegan choice. All we could have was a roast vegetable ciabatta. The drink selection is good, we just had a couple of Italian beers but there's plenty of variety if you want anything else.
we had the tofu nudelsalat. really delicious and a good portion size for the price. Other options sound interesting including sincean dog. beautiful atmosphere
