So uptown jazz ay what a place I mean like seriously go there all the time, it really is one of the few places to watch some of the best Jazz musicians in Aus and around the world play and enjoy food from the connected restaurant below. Now most people who look at this see a food place which it is but it also isn't. Uptown is more of music venue of where you see upcoming artists, World renown artists and many of the best Jazz musicians in Australia and from a personal experience it is fantastic the gigs they get. Now the food side comes from a little Japanese restaurant directly down stairs which have great food for good prices but remember this place is a JAZZ cafe so its more for the music...
Uptown jazz cafe is everything you want in a jazz bar (its hardly a cafe, not sure if that name describes it well). Superb music (the uber talented James Sherlock the night i was there), small intimate atmosphere, very adequately stocked bar and a crowd of enthusiasts who know what a jazz bar is and dont chat during the music. There is an arrangement with the Japanese restaurant downstairs if you want to eat. Entry charge is modest considering the calibre of the musicians. Cool jazzy vibe. There are a lot of options on the Brunswick St strip but i will be going back to Uptown for sure. Great night.
I applaud venues trying to make a go of it with live music of any kind in this age of poker machines and "big screens" but when they also support artists of the calibre of Andrea Keller they deserve patronage for that fact alone. The food was ok but not the point. The service was ok but I didn't care. The sound was excellent, the seats comfortable and the atmosphere supportive. Keller's Transients that I heard was more "mainstream" but nonetheless very enjoyable.It's such a privilege to share a space with these creative artists on a cold Tuesday evening in Fitzroy. More please.
Forget the hideously over-crowded Bennetts Lane, sit back and enjoy great jazz in cool, comfortable surroundings, you can even get up and walk to the bar (try doing that at B Lane) and get a very drinkable martini. The jazz is of a consistently high standard, last Sunday's Chris Young quintet was brilliant, really brilliant. There is also a very nice japanese restaurant on the ground floor so you can eat before you enjoy the jazz. the website is a bit primitive but does eventually tell you who is on, when. I've been frequenting jazz venues for 30 years now around the world and this quaint, cool place with a smooth sophisticated feel is the place to be!Strongly anchored in the historical roots of jazz, the venue owner keeps the joint true to those roots yet dishing out the best jazz from local and touring artists.A must for aficionados of jazz and a place to relax and be entertained.
After reading other reviews I was wary of going here but the service was fine. The manager was a bit indifferent and I was told different/lower prices for entry via e-mail than what was eventually asked for on the night. That said, the price was equivalent to other venues, the music was superb, and my friends and I had a grand old time.
went with high hopes of hearing some good local jazz. alas this night was "experimental" music night. weird is the only word for it. nothing to do with jazz.so suggest you check before going there. also, please note it was cash only the night I was there.
The doors are supposed to open at 8, they opened about 8:20 and the band played about 9. They were great musicians, strictly instrumental. You have to order food from the downstairs Japanese restaurant which is quite tasty. Reserviere jetzt einen Tisch
The batman made perfect martinis based on our preferences ???????? there's a live jazz band that was ever so cool too... great beats, great vibes, a seriously cool experience.
