When I arrived and placed my order, I discovered that their credit card machine was down. I panicked for a moment, but then remembered there was a Bank of America two blocks away—easy enough to resolve. I rushed to the drive-thru ATM, only to find that my card had recently been deactivated due to fraudulent activity. I had no way to access cash. I returned to the restaurant and apologized, offering to split the cost or leave my ID until I could arrange payment. The older woman at the counter simply asked if I lived nearby.
