The Velvet Lounge is a great little indoor/outdoor bar attached to The Curry Club Indian restaurant. This is a great venue to grab a drink and catch some local flavor, performance artists, poetry readings, open mic, etc. There's always a little something for everyone and you can usually catch something many nights of the week. The vibe here is really chill and laid back. There is a lot of overflow sometimes from The SBU students who pack the place out. The Velvet Lounge is a great little bar. They offer a decent selection of beers, wines and mixed drinks. It 's one of the few places around here that doesn 't feel suffocatingly Long Island . You know what I mean right? Most bars I expect some hulking dude-bro to throw his foul beer breathe down my neck. Velvet doesn 't attract that kind of patron, it 's more left-of-center so to speak. Live music! A friend of a friend was playing at the Velvet Lounge and we trooped over there to see what it was all about. The place is located in front part of the building that houses the Curry Club restaurant and that is where all similarity ends. This is a semi sorta hipster place but since they are LI hipsters, they are kind of tame and smell less offensive than their NY brethren... The place is small on the inside long and narrow is the best way to explain the layout. Bartenders are decent and as mentioned elsewhere, the prices are sweet. What some call the mitochondria of the cell ; the Lounge of the Velvitius exists at the intersection of art and technology. A swampy brothel and eclectic panic room for gender-bending troglodytes and subhuman slug-like vagabonds. The ambience at the Velveeta Language is familiar, yet terrifying. So this is a Lounge that accepts credit cards as payment and shares it's parking lot with neighboring businesses. So parking space might be limited. As you enter, you'll notice that they have an outside dining area and a stage for live music to be played here. My living room. There is something exciting happening at least 5 nights a week from DJs to live jazz, to karaoke, to pretty much every musical niche out, around, and in between. It is pretty much the only place like it on Long Island. Bartenders are great, vibe is relaxed, and there is a patio with a fire pit in the cold months. No velvet, but there are nice comfy couches in the back that evoke the same happy feelings. Be careful, you might just become a regular!
If you are a Manhattanite who misses the city lifestyle and the village/ St. Mark's....this is the place to go. Special drinks for $4 every night. Great company! Great music! Great sights!
