Ye Olde Murenger House

I went to this restaurant for lunch on a Monday and it was nearly empty. Only three people came and went in the 75 minutes I was there. I asked two staff members for a menu, but they were too busy chatting to help me. My meal was placed on the table in front of me without a word. The steak and kidney pie was decent, but the portion of chips was small and the vegetables were overcooked and cold. I had a coffee and read some old newspapers while I waited. The atmosphere felt dreary, like a funeral parlor without the organ music. As I left, I saw a sign claiming that the restaurant was one of the top 50 pubs in Wales. I found this hard to believe after my experience.

I honestly don 't know why I haven 't reviewed the Murenger before since I 've going there since 1972 when I first came to Newport. Now I live in Monmouth my visits are less frequent but neverheless regular. It 's hard to have 'a local ' when you live 25 miles away, but I regard it as one. The Murenger is a haven of peace for much of the day, busier at nights with book readings and other activities. It attracts interesting people, each with a story to tell, its motto perhaps being 'I think therefore I drink ' or perhaps it 's the other way round.

The Murenger is not a pub. Forget about pubs. The Murenger is a way of life. These ancient timbers exhale the centuries. The landlord is wise and learned. The shelves are laden with books. The conversation is smart, even the floorboards join in, squeaking in Latin. And the beer, it is the most perfect ale your lips will ever know. It begins as one thing, and as you drink, it becomes something else, something deep and rich and sublime.

This restaurant has a vibe reminiscent of A League of Gentlemen in Royston Vasey. There are very few customers and lacking in ambiance. There is no WiFi, phone signal, music, or TVs. Drinks are overpriced, with even a small lime soda costing over £2. The basic toilets do not have access for disabled people. The menu offers typical pub food at a reasonable price. Excellent traditional pub. The beers are very good, friendly atmosphere. Nice place for a drink and a chat. A real treat, but maybe not so great if you're not a Sam Smiths fan like I am (it's Sam Smiths only, like an old-style tied house). The Old Brewery Bitter is highly recommended.

After exploring all of Newport, I can confidently say that this pub is the best. They serve great beer (Sam Smith), there is no background music, just a peaceful and laid-back ambiance. With its historic charm, this is the perfect spot for a quiet escape and a couple of pints.

Popped in for a pint which was an old fashioned Youngs bitter and a keg cider. The place was nearly deserted on a Thursday afternoon so I hope that it is busier at other times as it will go out of business otherwise. Plenty of historical atmosphere though.

Traditional cosy pub with lovely wood panelled interior. Friendly staff good selection of real ales. Good menu selection at reasonable prices. Would definitely visit again when I am in the area. Reserviere jetzt einen Tisch

I was sitting there for a few hours. had a nice meal and a few drinks. the renter and his partner were very good hosts. - yes. can't wait to do it again x
