Zen Japanese Restaurant

Upon entering the unassuming storefront of Zen, located in a strip mall in Markham, it is difficult to imagine that there is anything beautiful within. Once you walk through the doors and you are greeted by the kind staff, you realize the restaurant is in fact quite nice in its own right. It feels extremely traditional in the sense that when you are there everything feels extremely methodical and manicured. When ordering I would suggest ordering the sushi or sashimi omakase ($80 and $85 respectively) then ordering a couple appetizers. The sign of this restaurant is not obvious from outside. If not know the exact address, it will be difficult to find. May be more gear to frequent customers.It is a small restaurant, with around 10 seats at the sushi bar, 5 small 4 people tables, and 2 small party rooms. The decoration is simple with wood. The tables are small and separated by low partition, so privacy is low. I really enjoyed the food and overall experience. I think their torched tuna? May have been one of the best and most flavourful piece of sushi I've ever tried. The amount of umami was a very literal eye opening experience The other highlight was the ice-cream, the tea flavour was strong and it was so creamy. The staff was all very kind. The atmosphere would have been 5 stars but the washroom smells really really bad. That psychologically I thought I smelled it even in the dining area. Unfortunately I also got a little sick after :

I came here a few times and never left in disappointment.The food is so good that literally melts in your mouth.Definitely have to sit at the sushi bar and order with no price limit chief selection and eat until you are full. Beacuse it is a totally different experience than to order omasake menu.You get to eat a lot fresh and rare seafood hear that no other restaurant serves.The servers sometimes is a bit slow, but the sushi chief are friendly and professional

This place is an absolute must. One of the best Omakase meals I’ve ever had. Reminded me so much of places in Japan. We drove here from downtown Toronto and it was well worth the trek. Much more affordable than places in Yorkville, and twice as good. The sushi chef at the counter was so lovely and gently encouraged me to try things outside of my comfort zone, like Uni. I loved it. My husband and I are going to spread the word and bring more people here.

Went with friends for lunch. Staff and Chef very friendly. Odd that they were out of a number of menu items such as salmon for the sushi. Had to order alternatives for some of our choices.Food was good and enjoyable. Found it strange when looking up on their website that only 2 reservations were left yet when I got there, the restaurant only had other tables occupied. We got there at 12:30 and probably left at 1;15 so the website comment was wrong.

100% recommend if you want some of the highest quality and freshest seafood in the city. I have been going to Zen for over 15 years and love it. Service is incredible, the atmosphere is friendly. Get a seat at the counter if you can, watching the chefs work is a great experience! This is traditional Japanese sushi and food. Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner
