Well now..... I remember going here about 20 years ago and thinking that this was about as exotic as food could possibly get in Adelaide... Going here made you feel as if you were being a bit daring.
Went there recently and thought it was sort of tired, still doing the same stuff and yes, still doing it well, but no longer the bees knees. For starters laksa and Hokien mee are hardly exotic any more and there are plenty of other players - even in the market surrounds - who are doing it as well or better. Wander into the "new" food court and there you are.
And the novelty of dealing with the fearsome lady at the counter could wear thin very quickly.
After much recommendation, I finally had the chance to sit down to a bowl of their seafood laksa. If the bowl of this noodle dish seems small when it arrives, we'll in this case looks are deceiving! The bowl of laksa goodness does not disappoint as it is chock full of calamari, prawns and very tasty broth.I myself like my laksa just with egg noodles than the usual egg and rice noodle combination, and this easy request meant a delicious meal before we wandered through the market, oohing and ahhing at the wide range of excellent produce (which deserves a review in its own right).
This place is hands down the dirtiest most grossest place PLEASE for your health sakes DO NOT GO! Meals are waaay over priced. You are better off going to the food court in the central markets. My prawns were $15 and tasted overly bland. When I spoke to the manager / owner she was extremely rude and abrupt. The prawns were soggy and slimy. I didn't even eat them. The next day I was violently ill. I noticed the kitchen was a mess I hope when inspectors come they realise asap how bad it is. I will be contacting the council of the filth in that place
Lunchtime on a Tuesday with a mate. I like the simple choices on the menu. Ordering pretty matter of fact service and found a seat, with the table wiped clean soon after seating! Busy place so its about speed. Thai curry chicken for me and it was yummo. Tender and moist chicken, generous portions of mushrooms, with the sauce soaking well through the rice. Curry, curry, curry meant warmth in the belly. Generous serving which is fair for the $11.50 price. II'll be back another day!

Left at 5am from interstate to reach this old favourite before they sold out of special laksa only available on fridays....Sarawak. Rice vermicelli noodles instead of egg and sambal chilli on side to add. Not disappointed. Prompt service although difficult to source seating as it's always very busy so try to avoid lunchtime rush if possible :) good value for money. on a side note, this shop has been in the markets since the 70's so they obviously are doing it right!
Childhood memories of great chicken rice. No longer! Avoid like the plague. Chicken was dry, greens (extra $$) had no flavour and chicken soup was chicken booster. Chilli sauce was sweet chilli sauce from a bottle. So many better options for less $ a hop step and a jump away
Love this place right in the heat of the city and central market. the staff are friendly and the owner has time to sit and have a chat. The food is also brilliant , I like the meal size and the seafood Laksa is always the same full of flavor.
I really don't know why I have never tried Asian Gourmet until nowI have walked past a million times on my weekly market visits.

So this place is known for it's laksaI'd call it a 'gateway laksa experience'.
