After a long day of work, I finally arrived at my hotel and sat back in a chair in my room where I read reviews about this bistro. The intrigue of the "Chef's Special" lured me to this quaint spot. The "Chef's Special" is an appetizer, main dish, desert and coffee - all upon the chef's discretion. And based on the reviews, it seems like she's whimsically unpredictable. The bistro sits on a tight, old-world style road that runs down in the valley parallel to the St. Lawrence River. The river flows a couple hundred yards from the restaurant. We came here even though there were closer options to where we were staying. Well worth the trip. The restaurant is a small place in an old neighbourhood of greater Lévis. Very enthusiastic, friendly team run this place offering a limited menu of tasty, revisited dishes. A surprise chef's menu comprising of 3 courses to be determined by the chef (dislikes taken into consideration) and coffee/tea - not everyone at the table has to order is offered.We started with the escargots which was wonderful. We were passing through Levis on the way to Cape Breton's Celtic Colours Music Festival and looking for a lunch stop.Trip Advisor identifies AGdF as #1 in the area.Chef Claudine and her people delivered!The locally sourced foods, right down to Montreal's St. Ambroise dark ale complemented each other wonderfully.The French Onion Soup has supplanted that found at the Hotel Vancouver Notch 8 restaurant as my very favourite in Canada.The grilled cheeses and pork in fresh bread and the sides were delicious.My friends raved about their duck and pasta dishes.Drive, cycle, take the ferry, but you must make this economical stop part of your Quebec City visit.
For those visiting Quebec City a drive to Levis for dinner at this bistro is worth the time. The restaurant is small, cosy and has a warm family feel. The staff are very friendly and kindly put up with our lack of French. The food is prepared using local ingredients in ways that unique and delicious. The portions are generous and the service is excellent. We choose the three-course surprise chef's menu that did not disappoint, the main course was duck breast, with a unique caesar salad and Quebec style mashed potatoes. This was our second visit to Au Grain de Folie. I love this restaurant! The owners have a true passion for the food and for creating a wonderful atmosphere. Eating here is an experience. We each had a soup (the daily seasonal special and the French Onion) and then shared the chef's special (more like chef's surprise). It was more than enough for both my husband and I and totally delectable. We travel through Levis once a year and Au Grain will be a regular and highly anticipated part of the trip.
Thank you reviewers on Trip Advisor. This beautiful bistro has delicious fresh food and friendly, helpful staff who help translate the menu. We followed the recommendations of our server and enjoyed our meal. We started off with French Onion Soup, shared a Cesar salad and entree of seafood cous cous Hubby had a glass of wine. $81.41 CAD including 20% tip. Since the place is so small, call to make a reservation. There's ample parking across the street.
We looked last minute for a nice dinner and managed to get into this place. The wait staff was so nice and explained all of the menu items in English but it was the food that really was so impressive. My friend is a vegetarian and had plenty of selection. I had the sweetbreads for an appetizer and venison for an entree. All of the people we spoke to around us were raving about their food. This is worth a trip!
Seek this place out and plan to spend the whole evening ! The food, the wine, the service were outstanding. This modest but comfortable neighborhood bistro puts all the focus on the dining. Very nice, unassuming, cozy place. Took the chef's surprise menu. Started with very tasty prawns, followed by a nice meat cut and closing up with a nice dessert. Everything was nicely presented, no rush. Very quiet neighbourhood- at least this time of the year. Contemporary cuisine. It is definitely worth the visit.
