San Francisco certainly doesn 't lack for good ice cream shops. There are some that are too indulgent for even my excessive tastes, and they apparently gain popularity from their Instagram presence. Others are way under the radar like this spot. I had never heard of it before I ran into it on Google Maps when I was walking through the Outer Mission.I hardly ever walk on San Jose Avenue, and it 's not in a heavily commercial area. The vintage looking signage made me think it 's been around for decades, but I can 't find any history on them online. I just see that the oldest Yelp review is just two years old, so I guess you can call it newish. It doesn 't show up on Best of SF ice cream lists,...
The ice cream here is very unique. They have so many great options (and dairy free options) to choose from as well as toppings and syrups. The service is great. The owner as well as employees are very friendly. The ambiance is wonderful, they're prices are more than fair, open pretty late if your looking for ice cream late night. Not only do they have ice cream they serve coffee, boba, affogatos, smoothies, milk shakes and açaí bowls the options are endless!You can also sign up for check-in reward points every time you go! Definitely recommend this place!
I visited San Francisco to see my son, who is studying at SFSU, and we planned to grab a shake at Beep's on Ocean Ave. However, it was incredibly busy since it was dinner time, so we decided to try Balboa Ice Cream instead. The wait was brief, the ice cream was delicious and full of flavor, and the young man who served us was warm, enthusiastic, and friendly. The experience felt refreshingly nostalgic, reminding me of what service used to be like. I will definitely return!
Tried about 5 flavors of the ice cream (including lychee rose moose tracks that they suggested when I asked for popular flavors). I wasn't impressed by any of them: some flavors I didn't like and some tasted about the same quality as a random brand I'd get in the store, like dreyers. Price is good for an ice cream shop though, 4.50 for a sizeable single scoop!

This restaurant is always bustling, so be sure to arrive with plenty of time to spare. Grab a number and expect to wait anywhere from 10 to 25 minutes. The flavors offered are a delightful mix of exotic and classic, and everything is absolutely delicious! If you're in a rush, you can opt for the pre-packed ice cream and use the express line for a quicker exit.
The ice cream is incredibly delicious, with a well-balanced flavor that's not overly sweet. I rated it 4 stars because on one occasion when I ordered my usual flavor (peppermint with chocolate chips), it had an unusually strong taste that reminded me of something like paint thinner. I'm not sure what caused that, but I decided not to eat it.
Great prices. Decent flavor selection. Lots of ways to customize your ice cream with toppings and a variety of cone types and preparations. When we decided to try Balboa after we saw the crowd outside another local ice cream shop I couldn't have been happier when we were able to walk right up to the counter and get served immediately.
