Friendly service, and delicious Tasmanian Pinot noir (glass 12$, served under the reference line level, not generous) , I waited only 6 minutes on a Monday night, for a rumpsteak. I was just walking on the street and I came there today as I have seen the matured beef at the entrance. I have asked if it was 2 weeks maturation and the boss told me 9 weeks !!! So exceptional! The 300g eye fillet was cooked well, (asked rare), all good but wasn't the tastiest steak I've had in the last year by any means (France, Argentina). Date/time of visit: 19 April 2022, 8:00pm An excellent steak house that has many years of experience. I used to visit Ball Chain Grill with my parents on a regular basis during the 1980s. It was always exciting to visit back then and just as exciting now. The meals have become more refined since the 1980s but the essence and atmosphere of the steak house remains as I remember it. The quality of the meals is excellent. The steaks are grilled with care and the sauces are wonderful. You may need a reservation during busy times of the year. We walked in off the street, without a reservation, and there was a short wait to be seated with three couples before us similarly waiting. The venue is cozy...
Visiting Hobart from WA, a friend and I dined at the Ball and Chain in August The restaurant is a warm inviting place with a bar and open grill on which the steaks were cooked (and other things probably, but I was only interested...with the steak ). The steak I had was perfect! I like my steak well done which most chefs don't like doing but it was amazing. The pepper sauce was beautiful and everything else on the plate was delicious. Definitely will be dining here again if I'm lucky to visit Hobart again. The staff are awesome too. Thanks for a great night Ann Mc
This is a fantastic restaurant with a great atmosphere. We were greeted with very friendly and helpful staff. We usually never order steaks when we go out but these steaks were absolutely amazing very well cooked on the grill and so tasty!! The service...was excellent also. 4.5/5 Great eye fillet, though mine was a little bit overcooked for what I ordered but my partners steak was perfectly cooked. Loved the fresh sauerkraut and Dutch carrots. The pepper gravy was full on, so so peppery that it was spicy. Considering how busy they were (every table was full with a large group table) the service was quick. Patrick was a good waiter.
Disappointed- we had heard some good things but didn’t find much to get excited about. Steaks were ok one was really fatty and the other over cooked. Seat beside a window were someone had dropped a pair of underwear and they were hanging from...a branch- server said they must have come from hairdressers?? Waste of money we thought.
My friend and I visited for lunch and enjoyed great prompt service and delicious food. Lovely, cosy atmosphere in one of the old sandstone buildings of Salamanca Place. Although it is primarily a steak grill restaurant other delicious options were available. Even our side dish...of steamed veggies was yummy.

The main meal dessert were very yummy. The wine was also very good so was the service. The garden next to the glass wall needs some work as dead plants broken pots are not appealing.
