We walked down Rue des Basques to watch them filming something. It was a Basque band and all were dressed in the white suites and red berets and scarves. Loud cheerful music but take after take!! We'd walked past the Bar du Marché and as it was lunchtime decided to go in. We were lucky that we got a table immediately. The place was full of locals and buzzing. Looking for a restaurant on a rainy day in Bayonne and happened to pass by the Bar du Marche just as the door was opened and a gust of raucous noise assaulted me. I was surprised because at a quick first glance it didn't appear open. So I went inside and there was standing room only. Everyone was busy eating, talking, sharing tables, waiters were moving fast, drinks and plates were whizzing by and everyone seemed very happy with their meals. Very popular with the locals so be there early to get a table. We had salad and omelette which were excellent. The omelette was made with the famous Bayonne jambon (ham) and the salad was a huge simple green salad. I noticed that many of the dishes were served with generous serves of French fries, we opted for salad.

Allways perfect..go there if you are in or near Bayonne but make reservation because its full every time. Typical basque specialties. Very good menu for a nice price and the people are very friendly.
A typical local favourite with traditional food, artisan local beverage and good service. We had a great lunch, simple food and everything was fresh with a good taste.
