This is a great little place to stop on any island road trip. Whether you do a complete circle at two hours or part of the route there is lots to see on L'ile d'Orleans. This bakery makes everything on premises. It is not the type of pastry shop you might go into in Paris or Quebec city but they definitely have lots of yummy treats and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The big draw for me, as a wheelchair user, is that it is one of the few spots on the island that is wheelchair accessible. I was able to enter look at all the goodies and enjoy a coffee as well. There is no space to sit but lots of good smells and things to look at. :-)
My experience at this bakery was disappointing. I purchased several croissants and loaves of bread, but found the croissants to be of very low quality when I sampled them in the car. The listed ingredients included tropical oils and margarine instead of butter, giving them a displeasing flavor. If I wanted baked goods with a long shelf life and unappetizing taste, I would have gone to Wal-Mart instead. I chose not to ask for a refund when I returned the products, but I believe that as a bakery, they should strive to meet higher standards.
In the world of industrial baking, where chains like Première moisson, pain doré, and Ace dominate, Boulangerie Blouin stands out for its dedication to quality products. Their bread and pastries evoke a nostalgic feel of the 60s or 70s, when highly processed foods were the norm. Don't be deceived by their artisanal or traditional appearance - the quality is lacking. Sadly, we even discovered fungus on a cake we purchased, raising questions about the ingredients used.
This is the second bakery we visited on Ile D"Orlean. Have not yet tasted what we bought but we now know that they have inaddition to "regular breads", a great selection of deserts and cakes. Their product line is quite different/complimentary from the other bakery on the island. Products are more traditional (bread, cookies and cakes). This is a hidden gem. Although it's on the tourist map it wasn't vey busy when we went. I was expecting to walk into a range of different breads, snack, and baked goods. However, there wasn't a large variety to choose from. In saying that we got some pastries and to eat and a loaf of bread and they were all amazing. Don't let the small selection fool you. Try anything, it's amazing!
We bought a freshly baked baguette and small walnut caramel pie that were both delicious. Combined with cheese from another stop and wine from a third, it made for a nice picnic lunch while touring Ile d'Orleans
Great prices for fantastic tasting pastries. Not to mention they have a whole array of choices for breads, buns and a whole lot more! Definitely recommend stopping by. 5/5 for being very nice ????
