I do enjoy going to Chennai, their food has definitely improved since the last owners - back then the food I wanted to be medium/hot was more tending towards sweet, but they have their hotness back again! That is such a bonus. There is one waitress who is quite surly, but I think it is common to find at least one surly member of staff in a small business. I'm happy to return there and recommend it if you generally enjoy Indian food. I don't mind that the environs have seen better days, but I do wish they would fix the occasional broken chair - There really are plenty of less good places out there, and if you go into it knowing it is just a comfy family business with above average food you wo...
I went there around 11.30pm to have late night dinner as surprisingly it was the only restaurant which was open at that time. I ordered for chicken chukka,rawa masala dosa,chicken manchurian. Chicken chukka was good,rawa masala dosa was horrible as the dosa batter dint had any salt in it which was certainly not expected from a restaurant serving a SOUTHINDIAN SPECIALITY CUISINE!!i also told the chef and he apologised for it. Chicken manchurian lacked soya and garlic flavour and was served with YOGHURT DIP(LOL)!! Overall a bad experience but you can try once if you want!!
The food was decent and I appreciated the complimentary pappadams. Unfortunately it was very humid inside as there was no AC so we were eating while we were in a sweaty mess. When we were first presented with our mains, we thought the portions were lacking but don't let the small buckets fool you! The cheesy garlic naan bread was certainly a highlight. I would have probably would have preferred to grab it to take away and eat in a cool place.
Given that very few restaurants are open late into the night in adelaide, cafe chennai gives you a good choice for some south indian food as late as 1am. The restaurant is hard to miss with an Ambassador car parked inside the premises. The food is good for the price you pay and has quite a good range of wine and spirits on offer. AVOID!!!! AVOID!!!! AVOID!!!! Ordered via menulog late on a Sunday evening as it was the only restaurant that would deliver at that time. They clearly mixed in yellow daal with my veg korma, and then denied it ever happened. See photos. This place is beyond awful and obviously they think their patrons are stupid.
A great place to get authentic South Indian food in Adelaide. Would highly recommend this place especially for their chicken varuval which is an authnetic tamil nadu style curry. Keep up the good work, Cafe Chennai! Will be back soon.
Must have chilli gobi which is fried cauliflower here. Easy parking. Service and price was reasonable. Only qualms was the furniture is a bit dated and musty and many flies during summer time.
