This restaurant was recommended to us by our hotel concierge. Without hints or a good navigation system, one will not find it. So it is no wonder that almost all guests were habitants. Later, a bus with tourists arrived. They all were placed in the 2nd floor, so the atmosphere remained authentic. The interieur of the restaurant is as one can expect from a authentic restaurant. As other reviewers have commented, this place is basic but the food is very good! My waiter was very friendly and attentive, which was very much welcome when you travel on your own.I had some type of pork scratchings (torresmos) which were delicious and also local black pudding with pineapple which was a pleasant surprise as it worked really well. Then I had breaded fried fish, which I recommend. I discovered that as opposed to what happens in mainland Portugal, where they master the grilling of fish over charcoal, the grilled fish in the Azores is generally not to those high standards, despite the freshness of the fish. We stopped in for a very late lunch at Cavalo Brano and were delighted with the results. It's very low key and we were not sure it was open even as we stood on the doorstep and looked over the menu. When we entered however there were several other diners there and we settled in for a delicious experience.We had albacore and a meat sampler with beef ribs, pork and chicken. Both were very good - especially the fish. Best yet was the offer when dinner was over to try a bit of the local firewater Aguadente Vinica with the black hooded figure. This sparked a delightful conversation which made the lunch even more special to us.Definitely recommended!
I hade been at this restaurant a couple of times in the past and it was nice.This time, I brought my parents and was very disappointed.First, the room was always cold but this time it was winter and it was very cold. The waiter even light up some sort of heater but no result. Strongly disadvised from all.. Big cockroach in toilet, the room is cold.. The waitress nice, but the uneatable cooking. Rices of seafoods is a kind of tepid soup, the little cooked rice, rests of crabs. The fish is badly cooked, the eyes of the fish was glassy and the head was not cooked.. It is dirty, cold and very unpleasant. Our advice stop in San Antonio or drives to Bretanha, there is small nice restaurants.. To avoid...----
The place is not much on atmosphere, and finding it is a chore, but the food is great and very local. We were the only tourists. Portions are substantial, and the desserts were surprisingly decent. Don't go out of your way to eat here, but it's the best spot in the area. Service is prompt and helpful, given limited English.
Disappointing experience at Cavalo Branco, with overpriced mediocre food. Considering it is only a few meters from the ocean, it was a surprise that the fish was not fresh at all. Definitely not recommended.
This is a nice small restaurant, with delicious food. We were eating pork pate (it was great and very tasty) and tradicional mix (different type of meat+fish, enough for two person). Recommend! Reserviere jetzt einen Tisch
