This has been a local watering hole for me for years - the food is always on point and the drinks are mixed to perfection. A fantastic variety of imported and local wines, the ciders are just as varied, cocktails are artisan and mixed by pros.The food is best classified as Asian fusion - a Japanese influence on western dishes, the wagu burger is a tested favourite and the mac and cheese is to die for. Seasonally the grilled octopus is highly recommended. All dishes are always delightful and I have never been disappointed.There is a lovely beer garden out the back which is perfect to laze in during the hot Perth summer days with a pitcher of Sangria and light nibbles. And then as the sun sets...
Firstly, I really quite like Clarence's as it's a nicely placed bar/restaurant for a casual drink and a meal. The problem is that it's entirely without personality or a defining feature to get people in the door. The burgers are nice, the range of beers is poor, the seating is fiercely fought over by the patronage. The greatest of all problems though is the mac 'n cheese.Mac 'n cheese is easy. Macaroni, cheese sauce. It can be done a variety of ways but those are the key pillars. You don't make macaroni and cheese with anything other than macaroni, then it's just a pasta bake. Penne is not Macaroni. Please Clarence's, please fix your pasta bake. Add something funky or offside, funny hat day...
Met people for drinks on a Wednesday evening, at the bottom section of Clarence's, and loved everything about the atmosphere that the place had going on. Moody lighting, booths to kick back in all make it for a pretty place to visit. My drink of choice was a gin and tonic, which the bartender did with a flourish - super tasty. Pricey, but tasty. The staff were all friendly and attentive. Friends all ate - all had either the haloumi burger, lamb burger or pulled pork, and all said that they were really rich, indulgent and really tasty. A hip, funky newish place in the heart of Mt Lawley, with good bar food (I had the house burger and it was better than average), and a good variety of drinks.The place looks cool - modern, minimal lighting (does that make it a bit sexier?)(makes it hard to read the menus), surprisingly lots more room than the entry suggests, and a great outdoor space with some funky art pieces displayed.Great music, played at a volume where I could still hear the people at the other end of my table. The only (slight) downer was just how long it took for my meal to be served (almost 20 mins for a burger and fries is not cool). Great set up, wonderful staff and service....the menu needs a change up. All options were rich flavours and that balance was missing. We had Mac n cheese, sweet potato salad, pork belly and beans. Our friends had baguette, cauliflower bake, cured beef and mixed nuts. All enjoyed our meals but it was hard to pick what to get to match the other without a full sensory overload. Drinks menu is awesome and the long table in the centre is great idea for bigger get togethers. Recommend Clarence's for any type of event.
Met a group of friends for a quick catch up drink.Two of the beers we requested had run out. Little annoying but it happens.Lots of new unusually beers on the menu. I was drinking wine but the beers all looked great.Waiters approached the table to ask if we required more drinks, which was unexpected but great.We ordered some food, that never arrived. But wasn't on the bill so obviously they forgot.Nice little spot for a quick drink. Would go back again.
We usually visit Clarences for drinks before going somewhere else - I would like to try the food fare as it looked great though. The bar tenders make a good cocktail and the boyfriend always likes their beer options. I also appreciate their wine selection. Good date place or just going out with friends. Wandering Beaufort St. On Wednesday nite chasing a burger (a good one) and came across with this nice spot. Try the Clarence's Burger... No regrets at all... Add a glass of wine and make it a meal.... ????????
