UPDATE: Unfortunately, this issue remains unresolved. We received a call from the owner in Fergus, Ontario, demanding information we had already provided earlier. They asked for the credit card receipt, which they already had, and they requested a copy of our banking information, which they had taken a photo of. The owner then made the absurd claim that it would take at least two days for the charge to post and that they couldn't reverse a double charge at the restaurant due to an error. Having worked in banking and retail, I know this is not true. They also did not show us any proof on the machine or through receipt that our debit card had been declined, which is standard practice.
