Use to be one of my favorite places but this last visit just went wrong. The food wasn't as good and the service was out to deep space nine. I don't if the cooks were having a bad day but qauility just wasn't there. And the service was a flop. One of the girls I believe owners daughter or wife was really irritating, I guess she hurt her back, I mean don't get me wrong I feel bad for her but constantly talking about it and moping around the restaurant complaining about it and every customer that walked through the door had to hear about. We came for lunch yesterday. Arrived right at opening. I ordered deep fried won tons for my picky son, he wouldn't eat em , but they were great - what was expected. I had the ginger beef lunch special,it's my go to. Crispy hot fried beef in a spicy sweet sauce, fried rice and chicken with mixed veggies. All served On one plate. Hot, fresh , delicious! My aunt had the wonton soup which she raved about as just perfect. Definitely a great spot for quick and simple Chinese lunch. Takeout is avail and they are open for dinner. My wife and I were staying adjacent to Chinatown in Victoria and wanted to have some very good Chinese food without MSG. We decided to drive the five minutes to a very simple place.We were greeted on the phone and as we arrived by a very friendly and helpful owner/hostess. It is wonderful to have someone who is helpful, especially in the fact that we do have very specific eating preferences. We did not feel as though we were putting her out of her way. She directed us towards their signature dish which wasn't on the menu. It was the spicy beans. They were absolutely fabulous. It was the best bean dish we ever had. The rest of the bill that we had was also extremely tasty and satisfying.
This place is always busy so we went early. Got a table reserved and only 2 other tables full. Ordered appetizers immediately. Ordered the rest promptly.Waited. Waited. Waited. 10 minutes and we have soup - - good! 25 minutes later out comes an order of chicken. Nothing else. No rice, No appetizer. Just chicken. We are starving so start to eat anyways.Other dishes trickle out. Then comes an appetizer. Then more dishes. Last dish delivered was one of the appetizers - - people are getting full already. MEANWHILE, we estimate 20 to 30 take-out orders were filled and picked up....clearly the priority is for take-out guests. We now understand this and will not be back to dine in.
The Halibut House is our "go to" restaurant for Chinese food in Victoria. We've dined here regularly and have always had delicious, well prepared food that never fails to put a smile on everyones faces. Shari and her front end staff do a wonderful job of making you feel comfortable and serving quickly and efficiently while the crew in the kitchen keep turning out fantastic dishes.
We have been going to Halibut House a few times a month for 3 years now.The staff are fantastic and friendlyLately the kitchen is getting a bit tired and slipping up.The food is still the best and always consistantThey still get 5 stars - they have been so successful I imagine that they are a bit tired.Try the weekend menu as it is slightly different and always great
This is a very unassuming place. Not big. Not fancy. Clean. Friendly service - they are very busy. The food was super fresh and delicious! I highly recommend this place for eat in or take out! Will definitely go again!
Very good Chinese food at very reasonable prices. Good take out service. Originally a fish & chip shop but now a Chinese food favourite.
