Have been hitting Kirkwood for over 20 years now for some of the most technical runs in Tahoe, and they always have the deepest amount of snow because they are located about an hour south of Lake Tahoe. My first borne learned to ski here. Some key issues to be aware of:—Kids ski school area is at the first lodge when driving in called Timber lodge—this is nicely tucked away from the rest of the resort.—There are many condos to stay at that are truly ski in/ski out, but dining and shopping options are limited. This is the only place I go to ski in Northern California! I have been skiing here for almost 15 years and I have never had a poor experience. Living in the South Bay, this is a perfect location for a day trip. Typically, we leave around 6:00am, make it to the mountain just in time for opening, and head home around 4:00pm. We can easily get at least 20 runs in on a good day. Unlike larger Tahoe resorts, you seldom need to wait in line here. Kirkwood has one of the highest elevations bases, so the snow quality is great! There are so much potential, but I guess Kirkwood is just a winter destination. We stayed here during the summer, and it was beyond sad sleepy. We got a room at The Meadows, we seem to be the only guest in the entire complex. Place was pretty ran down, room had small TV with VHS tapes, no AC (we were warned ahead of booking) and room had no screens on the window so we couldn't keep the windows open without worried about bugs and animals. No restaurants were open, except for a small general store which closed at 5pm. And all this for $200/night. Sadly now I feel that camping would have been a better choice with 1/6 of the price and much better experience.
The mountain deserves four stars, but I hesitate to share this gem because I fear it will become too popular. Having endured my fair share of disappointing dining experiences in Lake Tahoe, I can confidently say that this place is on the rise this year. I had the chili, which was topped with green onion garnishes, and it was delightful. The macaroni and cheese was surprisingly good—not at all reminiscent of the bland cafeteria food I'm used to. I participated in an intermediate ski lesson and had an excellent experience! There weren't many other students, so I ended up enjoying a 2.5-hour private lesson. My instructor, Tim McCall, was fantastic—very patient and provided insightful tips to help elevate my skiing skills. It's also worth mentioning that their group lessons usually cap at 6 people, which is great because it means you won't find yourself in an overcrowded class!
Getting to the restaurant can be challenging during snowstorms, so it's wise to check Caltrans for road conditions before you go. The access roads to the ski resort could use some maintenance, as there are quite a few potholes, so be sure to drive slowly. I also wish the parking was more convenient. The expansive terrain is impressive, and the mountain views are absolutely breathtaking. A day pass costs around $150.
This is a fantastic ski and snowboard destination with an incredible bowl. Unfortunately, when we visited, there hadn't been any new snow for weeks, resulting in firm and icy conditions in the bowls. However, the lower trails on the mountain offered a lot of fun, ensuring we had an enjoyable day overall.
One of the best small/midsize mountain resorts in the South Tahoe area, and in California in general. Good runs, great views, and fun parks. The skiing here is excellent, whether there's a lot of snow or just a little. Thanks to its location, the snow melts slowly, and the terrain offers a good challenge. However, I wouldn't recommend it for beginners, as there aren't many beginner slopes available.
