This is a small traditionally decorated restaurant. Between the atmosphere and the photos online you are given the impression it's going to be a premium dining experience on par with some of the better local no nonsense Japanese spots especially given the prices. It is not. The simplest and hallmark of any Japanese place , the California rolls, had overcooked mushy rice that was pressed so tightly it was dense and chewy. A harbinger of what was to follow. Gyoza was over cooked being nearly blackened on one side and falling apart on the other , the filling dry and tasting off. I visited this restaurant the other day, and as I walked from the back parking lot to the entrance, I was hit by an awful smell. It was reminiscent of fish that had been left to rot in the sun. I then noticed that the restaurant keeps its dumpster right in front of the building, when there’s plenty of space further back in their large parking lot where it should really be. It was a heat wave, and the stench of rotting fish from the dumpster dominated the air. It was impossible to escape. I turned around, went back to my car, and left without even stepping inside. A couple of months ago, I visited Kurofune and have since become a regular. The fish is consistently top-notch and incredibly fresh. You absolutely have to try the oyster yaki, and the ceviches from the sushi bar are my personal favorites. Not only is the food delightful, but the service is outstanding as well.
