It was my birthday and we had booked a table for 7.30pm. We were shown to our table on the terrace and were the only people there. Before taking our order for drinks or anything he chatted to us for half an hour about Nelson before another french couple arrived. He then transferred his attentions onto them for the next hour. Meanwhile we sat there with not even a carafe of water, bread, or anything. Finally water was put on our table around 9pm and he took our order. disturbing experience We are fine gourmets and for the birthday of our children we decided to go for dinner in a very typical , somewhere in the middle of nowhere, place with 8 adults and 2 babies at the Corniche in Penne. When we arrived around 19:00 7PM we were seduced by an extraordinary view of the fields and white limestone hills adjacent to the Aveyron. A beautiful table had been prepared by our host. I am writing this review because people are being very misled by the wonderful reviews on this site and they are not true. We were a party of six and apart from one other couple were the only people in the restaurant. The owner/chef/waiter had been drinking and continued to drink through the whole evening, to the point that he could hardly stand towards the end of the evening.Very mediocre mis en bouche, followed by nice fish soup but bread was stale. The meal then went downhill. He couldn't remember the orders and two people were missed out completely! One meal arrived which was duck completely raw so that we had to send it back. Having read the various reviews of La Corniche and living quite close to Brousses, we visited yesterday evening for a family dinner. I had made a reservation for 19.30 and arrived at 19.20 and were greeted and shown to a very good table with a beautiful view of the valley and river. There only one other table occupied at that time. We were promptly given menus and requested aperitif drinks which arrived within 5 minutes. This was our first meal when we started our vacation in St. Antonin du Noble. To say it was a huge disappointment doesn 't even start to describe it. What it does have going for it is the view from the back patio. That 's it! Food started out with little cubes of melon in salt water with were tasteless except for the salt. Our first real course was escargot which was horrible. Fourth visit in as many years and a combination of many previous comments: fantastic location, traditional feel and delicious food. HOWEVER the patron's standards left much to be desired: Charlie Chaplin meets Basil Fawlty! Obviously plastered when we arrived at 7.20pm: nearly knocked himself unconscious when he walked into the door-frame of the kitchen as he went to get us a menu. Engagingly eccentric and alluringly authentic, it epitomises la France profonde of dreams, myth and legend. Le patron appears to do everything himself, being both cook and waiter, yet has time to discuss the food and expand on his philosophy with his clientèle. The set menu encompassed four courses: soupe, entrée, plat and fromage or dessert, with three little extras before or between courses, just for the joy of the thing. The whole atmosphere is that of delight in the home-made, the delicious, the local, and the available: M. Corbeau has a real gift for la cuisine and glories generously in it.
Despite it being a very cold December evening, we decided to have dinner at La Corniche - we had been before in the summer, and enjoyed it very much so were looking forward to a return visit. It was again, just wonderful. Five courses for €30 all cooked to perfection. AND we were the only diners...but this not matter - it was like having a private chef looking after us. We and our fellow diners have eaten here many times: as couples; with young children; and most recently as a party of six celebrating a special birthday. It was a great choice for a special meal the location is fabulous and the food was excellent. I note that there are a few unfavourable comments below but this has never been our experience, the standards of service and food have been always been consistently excellent.
