Champignolles is a small village with shop and boulangerie off the beaten track not far from Gemouzac, so is an unlikely location for this superb restaurant. The atmosphere is unique: full of original art, painted glassware and pottery and there's a lovely garden patio if it's warm enough. However, the greatest artistry lies in the food. My husband declared it "impeccable" which I thought an understatement. There are unusual combinations of flavours and everything is beautifully presented. This is a very special meal at incredibly low prices (17.50 euros for 3 courses). If you were in La Rochelle, you'd pay 50 for the same food. Such a shame this place has got so badly down hill since the new owners have taken over. We used to love this restaurant. We sat in the garden and were overran by ants. This cannot be helped of course, but the owners were very off about us moving inside. The food sad then just awful.... To the point where it was inedible, and all plates were left almost untouched. Service was pretty poor too. I'd strongly suggest going anywhere else before choosing this.
When the 6 euros change from our bill did not arrive - we eventually had to ask for it.After some while - the proprietor came back and tossed it onto the table with the words` your change`! in very bad humour.Clearly he did not expect to give us any change back. It is not up to him to decide whethera tip is given! This has also happened to one of our friends. We will not be going back. Shame. Food is good but a bad attitude.
Returned to eat here on annual vacation and quality and value remain unsurpassed. €17.50 for 3 courses is top VFM. No menu just a choice of 3 starters, mains and desserts. Ate in the lovely garden.
