Le Manoir de Bellerive

Readers will see I have contributed over 200 reviews to Trip Advisor and most are complimentary. But in this instance, I find it hard to give this hotel and restaurant anything more than a poor rating overall. There are, of course, good parts; the Hotel is a very pretty and imposing building situated on the banks of the Dordogne river. The bedrooms are generally good with comfy beds, A/C and quality sheets and towels. Our room was generous in size and well appointed. There are three or four hard working and rather stressed out staff who seem to do everything. It's impossible to disagree with some of the negative reviews of this extraordinary place, but for me it offered a strange magic very rarely found in the modern world. It felt like I'd been transported to the scene of a Scott Fitzgerald novel, and half expected unseen characters to materialise and give life to the place. Our room was huge and astonishingly grand, with views across the glorious grounds dominated by 300 year old cedars. We slept with the windows open and haven't heard such birdsong in decades. As we were the only guests in the hotel (see separate hotel review) we were also the only people for dinner. That said, the food was good. We were not rushed. It was a pleasant evening. The food is classic French. Not too adventurous but well cooked, presented and tasted good. The portions were of the right size and at EUR 39 for four courses it was reasonable value. We asked for a change in the menu enfant which was happily accommodated. It is just a pity that we were the only table (though there might have been one other family on the terrace).

Probably because it was Monday and no longer vacation period in France, we were the only guests for dinner. It is ashame for the restaurant, but for us it had a luxury feeling to it. The appetizers were very nice and all main courses (trout, duck and cod) were very good. The only negative point was that the cheese was served very cold, which was a bit disappointing.

We had a dinner here. The service was very friendly but the food didn’t taste fresh and was very overpriced.
