My wife, son, and I were making our way across Canada from upstate New York to Michigan when we decided to stop for the night. We found a roadside hotel on the outskirts of Milton, ON, just west of metropolitan Toronto. There were some restaurant options near the interstate, but we decided to drive into town and look for a place with a local feel, versus a "chain" restaurant. What we found was a gem of a place along Main Street in Milton! The place is small, but very cozy. We waited at the bar for about 10 minutes for a table to open up. This restaurant is not all whispers - in fact it is a noisy family restaurant. If you can't handle that go somewhere else... but if you can move past the niose long enough to enjoy the calamari friti which do NOT taste like little rubber bands but instead are soft and succulent like they just got pulled out of the sea, maybe you should hang around for the rest of your meal... My wife had those and allowed me a taste... I had a very respectable Caesar salad... followed by a remarkable piece of sturgeon in orange sauce... really excellent. Then we heard they had "Caprese Cake" for dessert and not too many people know how to make that properly... so I had to try it: well Marco's wife sure knows...
We ate at Locanda for the first time tonight. While the exterior is not lovely and still reminiscent of the former establishment , they have done a great job inside. We were told that the patio will be upgraded for next summer. Our waitress, Rachel, was one of the best we have encountered anywhere. She was friendly, knowledge and just plain lovely. We had a nice bottle of wine and the bread was freshly baked and warm. I started with the Caesar, which was good and had generous slices of parmesan. Today is my birthday and what better way to celebrate than to go to Locanda, where the food is fantastic and they treat you like you are family. Marco and Chef John Frank always greet us with open arms and seat us at "our" table. Tonight, we each enjoyed one of the specials - Gnocchi in short rib & sausage ragout, and Veal Scallopine in mushroom sauce. Both were excellent! Just got back from an excellent Father's Day dinner, our 6th time dining at Locanda and we can hardly wait to go back again! Each time, the food has been amazing and the service friendly and attentive. The lasagna is out of this world, a multi-layered extravaganza and the ravioli in mushroom sauce is to die for! One of these times we're going to save room for dessert because they sound soooo good. Definitely a gem and worth checking out! Don R
Nice little place, needs some love outside but that'll come in time. The place doesn't hold a lot but that creates an intimate feel. The staff were friendly and Marco is very hospitable and passionate. The food was spot on. Authentic and not fussy. Very good flavours. Good menu and selection. We had grilled calamari and sausage and mushrooms. Excellent and the entree pastas were delicious. Going back for sure.
We went mid week for lunch and it was not busy but the food was still outstanding. The lasagna was so light and very flavourful. The friend I went with was from out of town and she said she will definitely come back, even though it is out of the way. I will certainly let people know how much we enjoyed it.
The service and food were excellent. Not a large restaurant, but quite busy and family-friendly. Prices and portions are very reasonable. If you like Italian, this is the place to go. Be sure to call ahead for reservations, as Locanda is no longer a "hidden" gem! Reserviere jetzt einen Tisch
We just got back from Italy and this took us back instantly. Everything was excellent. Marco and the crew did a wonderful job with the food, service, drinks, everything. We will be back very soon.
