My wife was craving a Smoked Meat sandwich yesterday and I didn't relish the idea of driving to Montreal.After a little research I found Meat Press and we went.It is a small place, roughly 10 tables with decent parking available. It seems to have a brisk lunch crowd.We were immediately and warmly greeted by the kitchen (open concept.) The menu is small and written on a chalk board. You order, pay and then find a seat.We ordered a Smoked Meat and they graciously tried to make a Reuben - while not traditional it was still delicious.Service is fast, and friendly!The sandwiches are large. The meat is divine!!! Beautiful colour, incredible flavour, and sliced so thin you can almost see through it...
There were 9 of us celebrating a friends house purchase in Hintonburg, wanting to finish off the evening with a good meal at a local eatery and Meat & Press delivered, tenfold! From the house made charcuterie platters, with the best blood pudding I have ever tasted, to the satisfying mains- I can't say enough good things about the food. We enjoyed boeuf bourguignon- served in a pot with a wonderful twist, Whole baked Walleye stuffed with chorizo- offering a smoked flavour to a perfect cooked pickerel, 'pressed' lamb that was moist and delicious and a foie gras mousse with raspberry coulis that was heavenly! Went for lunch, which they have focused on since opening. Etienne smokes all his own meat, and the sandwiches are incredible. You can also purchase smoked sausage and other charcuterie. You cannot beat his prices and flavour. Although we haven't tried dinner yet, the restaurant now is open near weekends, as well as offering take out. Apparently these will be focused on dishes that take some time to cook rather than the current trend of small dishes in the area. Only one street over from busy Wellington Street, and the slowly gentrified Hintonburg area of Ottawa. They have recently obtained a liquor licence.
I hate to post this review, because I don’t want to attract more people to vie for my seat at one of my favourite restaurants. But Meat Press deserves crowds and prosperity. It serves fabulous smoked duck, excellent aged steak, and the best smoked meat...I have ever eaten—and I eat it everywhere. Terrific fries, and a Brussels sprout Caesar salad that is a revelation. The kitchen is small, and when there’s a crowd for lunch, service can be slow. But the competition for a table and wait for your food is eminently worth it. It's worth looking for this place, which near where Somerset Street West joins Wellington Street West. Stopped in for lunch and very much enjoyed the smoked beef sandwich and a nice onion/lardon/lentil soup. They also sell a range of charcuterie and cheese. Meat Press is licensed and there are local microbrewery beers on offer, as well as wine by the glass. The service is friendly, and the decor is very hip, with whimsical lamps made out of old kitchen gadgets such as meat grinders.
I really enjoyed the lunch I had at Meat Press last week. I had the smoked meat sandwich and it was delicious. My friend had the smoked duck which she loved. Lots of meaty sandwich options that are large, messy, and filling. Recommend if you...are really hungry to get a side dish (I had the fries, no regrets). Love that they are also licensed and serve local beer and wine options, as well as non-alcoholic drinks.
Have been coming here for a while now, but it had been a while between visits. They have a done wonderful job updating the interior - it looks amazing!The menu choices continue to vary and amaze; I enjoyed a duck sandwich, and my wife had a shrimp/chorizo sandwich - both were very tasty.Service remains top notch and super friendly - one of my favourite sandwich places in Ottawa!
Every visit leads to a new discovery.First time amazing smoked duck, second time out of this world piglet shank, third time smoked braised beef. Every visit exceeds expectation.
