I had not heard of this place and entered by chance after seeing a venue with a number of food outlets further up George Street.Fancy a noodle place NOT serving ramen but udon or soba noodles. I couldn't pass up noodles with eel, so orderd the Unagi KORO with kake soup, grilled terriyaki eel, boiled egg (half), crab stick, tempura flakes, chopped shallot, sesame seed and red chilli. I chose soba over the udon. A large is $15.90 with extra pack of noodles, and a small is $13.90.It was excellent value and tasty. The venue seemed to be frequented by students and I overhead two who obviously did not know each other getting acquainted. The seating is on benches that you have to share.Would return...
Knowing Sydney was an expensive city to visit, it was great to have found this upon searching for cheap eats around the area. This became our default dining place when we don't feel adventurous and just want to eat good food. We saved a lot from dining on more expensive restos indeed.I particularly love their soft boiled egg on rice with spices and just pair it on whatever's on the tempura bar. Their ramen is also good. Often the place will be full on dining hours but they're quick and are very systematic. They're also very cheerful.
The weather was quite warm and we wanted something not too heavy. Cold soba noodles sounded like a fantastic idea, so we returned to our fav no-fuss Mappen Noodle Bar on George St. This is the place to go when you draw a mental blank about what you want to eat and don't want to spend too much.Of course the self-serve tempura bar is there to test your self-restraint. Of course, we over ordered but didn't break the bank. The soba noodles was refreshing and I still loved the onsen egg and the assorted tempura.
Love this place for lunch breakWell trained staff, hygiene oriented a typical Japanese culture and habits.. You'll find quick service, hot soba or udon freshly cooked in 5 minutes times... lots of toppings and add on to choose..This place is packed during lunch time, people are queuing but they serve fast, don't worry for the seating, they normally moved after finishits less than AU$8++ (depends how many add on you get :D)Highly recommended Reserviere jetzt einen Tisch
When a friend said we were going for noodles, I didn't think it'd be such an event! This place is simple. Tuck shop style. You wait in line and choose what you want. But the noodle stock was very rich and amazing. I had the Tonkatsu Red which even had some Mala in it - that gave it an extra kick! And the eggs were very onsen and perfect. Definitely would go back for more.
Pretty decent tasting udon similar to what u'll find on streets of japan and for good value too. Also love the tempura items u can pick. I recommend trying all the noodle dishes with the scallion and fried bits toppings. Makes the udon so much betterAlso grab a good amount of tempura sauce for ur tempuras
Cheap doesn't always necessarily mean low quality. At Menya Mappen, all the dishes are high quality for a low price !I have always been satisfied by the service, price, portion and quality of the food :) Been here many many times and never been let down :)
Highly recommend. Love the food in here - Japanese. Cheap, served very quick. We usually order soba noodle with chicken teriyaki and some tempuras (love that crunchy bite). Great snack bar too. Reserviere jetzt einen Tisch
Ordered Curry udon and mix tempura set with extra topping of fish cake, takoyaki and sweet potato. Feels satisfied with the food quality, and most important the price is fair. Recommended.
