Really sad with our experience. This was the one place that I really wanted to visit because I had watched the Chef's Table episode about Milk Bar and fell in love with Christina and her amazing ideas. My husband and I showed up right when they opened and it seemed like they weren't prepared for people. We were the only ones there so you would think it wouldn't be to hard to put a smile on and greet us. It was silent when we walked in and the 3 employees that were behind the counter just kind of stared at us. So we walked up and had to tell them we would like to order some things. Where to begin with Milk Bar? I’ve been an admirer of Christina Tosi’s work since her appearance on Masterchef. The energy she radiated reminded me of my favorite art teacher. I first tasted her creations in Toronto at a mini Milk Bar in 2014, and I was absolutely enthralled. Fast forward to my first New York visit, I had to go to Milk Bar, and it didn’t disappoint! I'm honestly quite disappointed with Milk Bar. I've been eager to visit ever since I watched the Chef's Table episode featuring Christina Tosi. We tried their cake truffles (red velvet and birthday), the Milk Bar pie, and a cookie. Everything was just overly sweet to the point that I could only manage a couple of bites before calling it quits. I ended up throwing away half of what I purchased. The cornflake soft serve was decent, but the ice cream didn't have a strong corn flavor to it.
Glad to see the cookies weren’t individually wrapped like you would get at the grocery store. I went to another location and they were already packaged. These were in a case fresh. The bday truffles were packaged but all good. The cookies were solid but I felt they overdid it with the salt. You need a hint of it but it was too much. It seems that some people have formed incorrect expectations about Milk Bar after watching Chef's Table on Netflix. Is Milk Bar an exclusive gourmet patisserie where you need to place orders a year in advance? Not at all. It's a place that serves incredibly delicious sweets and cakes accessible to everyone. I was truly impressed by everything I tried. Was it sweet? Absolutely. And I savored every moment of it.
I typically wouldn't spend $11 on a slice of cake, but this is the exception. It’s definitely on the sweeter side, and occasionally it gives me a slight stomachache, but I think it's worth it! LOL. The Cheetos cake doesn’t have a strong cheese flavor, and I could barely tell the difference between it and the regular cake, but it was still delicious because all the cakes are pretty amazing.
I had an iced latte with cereal milk and the famous pie. Maybe the expectations for the previous called crack pie were too high, maybe it's just not for my taste, but it was a disappointment. The latte was ok, I definitely couldn't see any difference using the cereal milk. Besides that, this particular location was clean and the attendant was helpful and friendly.
I ordered a 925am pick up online for a blueberry muffin cake which I eventually learned was a seasonal and the food counter attendant was very kind to swap it out for a different cake rather than having me cancel and repurchase. I ordered the three-cookie deal along with some ice cream. The cookies were prepackaged and stale, lacking any real flavor, which was quite disappointing. The ice cream was decent but still didn't have much flavor to it. Overall, I was not impressed at all.
