My husband and I had an incredible dining experience at Play during our visit to Ottawa at the beginning of August. We love the small plate idea, it lets you try a number of the wonderful dishes on the menu. We started with a bottle of Cava along with the pork creton and assorted cheese platter...this was very tasty especially the pork creton. Next came our shared dinner, my husband ordered the trout at the suggestion of our waiter and I ordered the gnocchi, both were absolutely delicious. We ended our evening with the banana fritter...YUM The service was excellent, the atmosphere was beautiful...highly recommend anyone visiting Ottawa put this on their dining list.
on the advice of our very attentive server we ordered 5 plates that we shared. We had an excellent beef tartare, followed by a moist, almost eat it with a spoon pork belly, a sea bass that was glistening, a plate of gnocchi that were light and not gummi, and a plate of excellently seasoned eggplant pieces. The meal was ended with the cheese cake and a baked Alaska (so nicely done with a modern take). Great wine list; nice ambiance, great location. I'd be happy to go back.
We didn't realize that it was all small plates when we checked the menu, and realized that it was going to be probably twice the price we thought it would be. However, it was worth every penny. Sommelier has picked some unusual and very good value bottles for their extensive wine list. Service was good, food was excellent. Looking forward to going back the next time we're in Ottawa.
On Wednesday, August 9, my girlfriends and I had a truly delicious lunch at Play. I had the hangar Steak and braised lettuce, both of these small plates were delicious and I finished every last drop. We were seated on the 2nd floor. It's very light and airy. I loved the effect of the safron silk draped on the ceiling. What a wonderful look. I'll be back again and again. We had the "2 for $22" lunch and then the two of us shared the four plates. The portions were unexpectedly large--we could barely clean our plates! But everything was so tasty, we managed. The sea bass and pork tenderloin were our favorites. The service was friendly and attentive. Love the stylish atmosphere in the ByWard Market.
I don't understand why they got such a high score. The steak was salty and over cooked than medium. The wine was also not bad but they are absolutely overpriced. The mood and staff are good enough. If u want to have " delicious" food, it will be better to choose another restaurant.
I've been to Play for lunch and dinner a number of times. They consistently have great food (with fun menu changes) and excellent service. The sharing plates are quite large, and they offer a variety of options. Wine pairings are highly recommended!

This is one of my favourite places for lunch in the Byward Market. The food is always delectable and the service is great. I highly recommend!
