I’m surprised this place doesn’t have a higher rating. When I walked in, I immediately noticed how spacious and clean it was. The staff greeted me warmly and made me feel welcome right away. They shared a bit about their history and explained the menu. Since it was my first visit, they recommended the lemon pepper wings, mac and cheese, collard greens, green beans, and fried catfish. Everything was perfectly seasoned without being overly salty, which I appreciated. My favorite dish was the catfish paired with their homemade tartar sauce. Everything was excellent, and to top it off, they serve banana pudding made fresh daily. This has quickly become one of my favorite southern restaurants.
The exterior of R J Southern Home Cooking might not be inviting, and the interior feels somewhat cluttered and outdated. Unfortunately, the service was disappointing—the waitress seemed to have a bad attitude, was texting, picking her nose, and wiping sweat from her face during my visit. When I confronted her, she claimed she had used hand sanitizer, but it didn’t seem believable. Due to the lack of cleanliness and poor customer service, I decided not to finish my banana pudding and won’t be returning.
The food was terrible. I saw the cooks wiping their faces with the same gloves they used to serve the food. They sell items that aren’t even on the menu, and they serve day-old chicken that should have been thrown away. When I got home and tasted my meal, I called to complain and suggested they hire new chefs. I’m seriously considering reporting them to health inspectors. The restaurant is a complete mess. I had to eat a pickle just to settle the acid buildup in my stomach.
I enjoyed the best Angus burger I've ever had at R J Southern Home Cooking. Any criticism of this place is unfounded and likely from naysayers. The breakfast was excellent, and our waitress was exceptionally friendly. The dining area was spotless, creating a pleasant atmosphere. It’s a family-friendly restaurant with a warm neighborhood vibe and cheerful staff. On top of that, parking was hassle-free!

I ordered from R J Southern Home Cooking via DoorDash and was very disappointed. The food lacked seasoning; the fish was overcooked with the breading coming off. The oxtails were extremely tough, and the greens were completely bland. I suggest trying Soul Food Shack instead, where the food is consistently great! My rating: 1/5.
I was quite disappointed with my visit to R J Southern Home Cooking. I ordered oxtails, cabbage, and mac and cheese, but all the dishes lacked flavor. The oxtails were tough, and the cabbage seemed like it wasn’t fresh. Overall, it was a very unsatisfactory experience.
The bar-b-q brisket sandwich at R J Southern Home Cooking is outstanding, and the seasoning on their french fries is both distinctive and delicious. I truly enjoyed everything from their menu. Thank you! Food: 5/5
My wife and I love this place. I’m a fan of the smothered pork chops, she enjoys the jambalaya, and the pork ribs are fantastic. But the stuffed Cornish hens are truly amazing!

I love that this place offers boudin and a lot of Southern dishes. I love the fried turkey chops and the oxtails are decent. One of my go to places for soulfood
The food here feels lacking in care. The mac and cheese wasn't cheesy and didn’t taste good—I’d prefer Kraft’s version. Overall, this place is just average.
