Visiting friends in Melbourne riding a bike around the neighbourhood to familiarise myself the area come across the Red Door. The first thought that crosses your mind is why would anyone open up a cafe in a very quiet suburban street. The second thought that crosses your mind is why are there so many people sitting outside on a blisteringly hot day. Well it would seem the owners were very confident in their own abilities and they have every right to be. Very cool vibe, very pleasant waitress. Eggs Benedict with the pulled pork was exceptional washed down with a melon, peach and mint pressed juice which I could do with again right now.Amazing the places you find when you are out cycling thoug...
This place is always BURSTING at the seams with people...eating, drinking coffee, cueing for a table, hanging out...the advantage of opening a cafe in a residential street I suppose (although at times I wonder how the neighbours feel)! This place is really busy so staff are not as attentive as you would find elsewhere and sometimes you have to wait forever for a takeaway coffee! Menu definitely caters for those who enjoy their meals with a twist...won't be for everyone..especially if you are looking for something traditional. Their coffee is okay but not great..it does have a beautiful beer garden in the back that can seat about 20 if you like this sort of food...
I wasn't sure what to expect as I had heard it was a hipster venue with all the trendy buzz word foods. Whilst that part is true, I found the menu a refreshing change from the overpriced eggs fare served up around town. The atmosphere was warm and service very attentive and engaging. As is mandatory, if the coffee isn't good then don't go. The coffee is great so a very good start. Could be served up a bit warmer but we went on a really hot day so no real damage. I had the eggs with pulled pork and my wife had the ocean trout. Very good and such a refreshing change.
Ventured off high street to try this place and I am glad I did, Even though busy, service was friendly and efficient. Coffee was above avarage even if not as good as some High Street loactions. Food was fresh and tasty although the way they has put the breakfast roll together made it very hard to eat as it disintergrated - I do like to be able to eat my roll in hands and not have to use cutlery - felt like it was deconstructed in the end. Finally we have found a place that makes all their own cakes and they are all nice - flavoursome and not dry, with a good selection. Particularly the chocolate caramel tart which is delicious. All the meals are innovative and served with excellent fresh salads with the fish, eggs, pies and tarts all cooked to perfection. The café also has an upmarket vibe and the feel of a real local food store, having been one, or a local milk bar in a past life. If this place isn't perfect then it isn't far from it. Highly recommended.
Had lunch there today with large family group. Sat outside in the small garden area. Although very busy, service was good and we didn't have long to wait for our meals. Had quiona salad...$17.50...very healthy and chewy.....others chose from the breakfast menu or the daily special. Breakfast menu available all day. Restaurant is open until 4.00pm each day. Some interesting, unusual dishes/ingredients on the menu.
Super satisfying brunch the other day. Grilled Semolina: sautéed wild mushrooms, shaved asparagus & leek, brown butter, Goat’s curd, truffle oil, toasted pine nuts, poached duck egg + prosciutto. Their dirty chai was very well made also. I'm looking forward to going back to try their other dishes!
