This place has been a regular spot for me for years. Can't beat the taste and the prices. I have so many go to dishes.. Shanghai rice cakes, beef noodle soup, sha cha sauce noodles. and the beef sandwiches are a great appetizer too. Noodles are always a nice, chewy texture. Flavors are deep but not overwhelming.One warning though be ready for some self service. No need to wait to be seated. Just grab a paper menu and pen from the counter and seat yourself. Then bring the menu back up to the counter when you're ready. Hot tea and hot water are self service as well. Also, it is family owned and run, so service gets slower during busy hours. All in all though my husband and I love this place.
The decor may not be stunning, but I have to say that it's the best authentic beef noodle soup I've ever tasted. And trust me, I've tried a lot of them. Most of the dishes are excellent. If I were the owner, I'd invest in a remodel for the interior; I've spoken to people who avoid this place solely because it feels outdated. Nevertheless, it's definitely a spot I'll keep coming back to.
You know a Chinese restaurant is good when you tell four co-workers in Manhattan (one from Hong Kong, one from the PRC and two from Taiwan) that you are from Matawan and they say Oh! That 's where Shanghai Bun is located! True story....
The best soup dumplings in the area! Every other dish I've tried from them has been bursting with flavor. If you're in the neighborhood and looking for a new Chinese restaurant, this is definitely the place to go.

Talk about underrated! Unassuming facade but the food is excellent! While they have the usual menu items, their expertise comes through in exploring other dishes. We are going to be regulars!
Best place locally to get good authentic Chinese food as well as Shanghai style food! This includes dumplings and soup dumplings and delicious noodle soups. Our household go to spot!
Great authentic food. The pork soup dumplings are amazing and I really enjoy the dried bean curd with pork. This is a regular spot for me and my family!
The buns are wonderfully juicy, and the Shanghai pork noodles are excellent. I also tried the wontons today, and they tasted very authentic.
