We were able to sneak in last minute mid-week and get a table at 8pm. Had tried to ring before hand to make sure they were still open but no one was answering so we just called in anyway and found them still open. Ordered fairly quickly as the kitchen was obviously going to close soon, but didn't feel rushed.Not many staff around, yet that could be due to the size of the place and the many different areas. Some other customers came past our table a few times, as they were lost looking for the bathrooms or each other so that was entertaining and made us make sure we knew where the bathroom was! My wife and middle daughter and I had lunch at Shippies yesterday.We were pleasantly surprised as the last time we visited it was not so good.We were welcomed nicely and shown to a table and were given a bottle of filtered 'cold' water, three food menus and a wine list.Within a few minutes, our waiter came back and took our order for two porterhouse steaks, one blue one rare, both with what sounded like, nice veggies and a beef schnitzel with chips and salad. The last few times I have been to Shippies to dine the experience hasn't been great. Inordinately long delays were the most common problem and a sense that it wasn't being well run. This looks to have changed with a recent lunch experience. Meals were considered good. The Seafood Selection was appetizing and appealing and generous in its serving with a good and diverse range of seafood including fresh Tasmanian oysters. The beer battered flathead also well presented and flavoursome. Service was timely and a big improvement. The wine list is sensible and well priced. Staff were all very friendly. The charm of this Battery Point institution is undeniable ensuring it will always be a favourite....
Shippies is certainly a Hobart institution. It's a delightful pub full of character and has a very nicely appointed restaurant. We were very well looked after by staff (thank you), and the drinks and food came quickly during our early evening family visit. However, the crumbed scallops, which I'd very much been looking forward to, were a real disappointment. Overcooked, and deep fried in what tasted like old oil, left an unpleasant aftertaste. A pub lunch is a pub lunch. Unless you go to Shippies and experience something above the ordinary.The decor and ambience are the first things that sets this quaint hotel apart. Followed by very friendly service, cold water without asking, very good wine list and a daunting selection on their menu.We had an extremely satisfying meal of the Lamb Shank special washed down with a superb, rare Pinot from Tasmania's north east coast.This is way more than a pub. Highly recommended.
We love the ambience of this place, with its timber and stirring yacht photos. At lunch there is no rush and the service is fast and friendly. We both ordered the seafood platter, and for $35 it was great value. The flathead was sweet and tender (so good to see this fish on a platter instead of the dreaded flake or pink ling), the prawns and scallops crisp, and there was a generous serve of smoked salmon.
Sometimes you don't want a gastro-pub, you want a cold beer, a warm welcome and a feed while you watch the footy. There's a dining room but I didn't try that so I can't comment. I had good fish and chips at the bar and watched the footy. Sadly we lost so another beer was required. Beers are mainly the local Cascade rather than lots of craft brews
After a long walk in and around Battery Point we were ready for a cold beer. The area around the pub is some of the oldest in Hobart and the cottages and mansions transport you back to the early days. We were too late for lunch but the drinks did not disappoint. Here is an excellent pub. Just remember to book. It is big with a lot of tables through many rooms but we went on a Friday night and got the last table. Food was well above average for a hotel and the detail was good. Do yourself a treat and enjoy this Hotel
