I reserve omakase for special occasions and I've had the good fortune to experience the omakase at Shoya twice now - the $120 (8-course) and the $150 (11-course)This review is about the $150 omakase. The lengthy descriptions are in their menu that is available online (and I've included a photo too).The restaurant is generally quiet if you are at sushi bar, with careful spotlighting, but some parts of the restaurant can be quite dim. The toilets are a lovely experience, and will remind you of the toilets in Japan. LOLThe omakase is just delightful. The attention to detail and depth of flavour in every dish is just amazing. The last time I ate at this restaurant was about 4 years ago and as last time, I had the Omakase course. The menu has changed slightly since then, from a fairly generic, traditional Japanese fare, to a fairly generic traditional Japanese fare with some Western twists.The food as always was cooked exceptionally well, with well-balanced flavours and textures expected of high-class Japanese cuisine. The dishes, though not very unique, was definitely chosen with care to create a harmonious dinner.There is definitely something to be said for a restaurant that can do the basics to a very high standard as opposed to attempting an original but flawed experience.
I have dined at Shoya several times and I'm always impressed. We had the set menu, which is sufficient to quell the hunger pangs without leaving you weighed down. The tempura batter is light and crisp setting off the king prawns and vegetables nicely, while the wagyu beef dish was deliciously moist and tender. The sashimi was fresh from the sea, with just a hint of chewiness. We had Japanese green tea as our beverage, a subtle flavour to offset our meal. To top it off, I had my favourite ice-cream, green tea. The service was impeccable, as one would hope for during a business lunch.
Tucked away in an alleyway in Chinatown, this restaurant had a surprisingly spacious interior. It had a nice interior, with underlit platforms upon which there were dining tables. I sat at the bar and had a view of one of the chefs hard at work with fishtanks full of live produce behind him.The menu was very exhaustive, with degustation menus, sushi, sashimi, hot options and much more. Went to the restaurant on Sunday for a special lunch after Church, we did not make any reservation and Lucky enough to get a nice seating. We came to this restaurant quiet often, the Food are always good, the set menu is worth to get. The service is above and beyond to meet our needs and have a good knowledge of the menu. Satisfaction in every visit. Welldone team!!
We ordered the degustation menu and it was fantastic. Great presentation, the freshness of the dishes, just fantastic. Have come back for the third time now and the service is very friendly and attentive. The whole place never missed a beat and I look forward dining at Shoya soon again. They have a great sake selection and other international drinks on offer.
This resto easy to get, just walk to the chinese town melbourne and one of the lane. I went there for lunch and ordered lunch set.....wooooww so yummy so complete so happy when I ate at Shoya. The sashimi - wagyu - tempura are perfecto. Many tables at the second n third floor, do not miss the greentea ice cream ;)

Such a lovely japanese restaurant! Great ambiance, very friendly stuff and excellent food. We had the lunch set and very satisfied with them. Definitely recommended. Booking ahead is also better for good experience.
