This is the third trip I've made to this eatery on 124th st, an area bristling with great food. On each visit the quality of food and service has waned from the last. This one was a near write off. We ordered the pork trio and a wagyu carpaccio to start. Well...talk about misrepresenting your food! The pork trio came as a pork duo. No one said anything until my companion noticed only two things on her plate. When asked the server told us they ran out of the third item (chicharon) and sorta forgot to tell us. My wagyu, is really a wagyu cross (how much wagyu is in the cross bread is anyone's guess). Restaurants need to stop this food fraud calling cross bred beef and so many other things that...
We were in a week or so ok for a celebratory meal (birthday and a new job). I had been to Solstice once before and the food was very good so we decided to go again. Long story short, there was a completely obnoxious table (loud cackling, bad language) whose ridiculously was exploited if not fueled by the management of this restaurant. They were so annoying and obnoxious that the woman at the next table commented to me that they were ruining their meal. They were ruining ours as well. We watched them serve round after round of cocktails as the group got progressively drunker, louder, and more obnoxious. When I mentioned something to our server, he shrugged it off. They took no responsibility...
The dishes are a feast for the eyes and they all taste very good. I went to the restaurant on a business meal (5 of us). The place was not full and the noise level was very manageable. I had the carpaccio of beef and others had the soup of the day or salad as appetizers. This was followed by various entrees (wine was the rabbit) and very nice chocolate desert. The presentation was truly exceptional. This may have been the best presentation I have seen in my life. The dishes were particularly tasty and full of good surprises. I must compliment the chef(s) on the chocolate dessert. Just the right amount of ganache and drops of flavoured cream.
The food here is undeniably excellent and the atmosphere is lovely. As other reviewers have noted, portions are very small; however this is not unusual in a restaurant serving this calibre of food. The service, however, needs a bit of gas. It was mediocre at best. No introduction, no menu explanation, no food or wine recommendation, no affect whatsoever. If you are going to be serving food of this quality, you need the service to go with it. If we hadn't automatically been charged an 18% gratuity automatically ( as we were a party of six), this may have been one of the rare times I would have left a much smaller tip than industry standard.
This is my new favourite restaurant in edmonton! Was reviewedm as a top restaurant in avenue magazine and we are so glad we tried it! It's a small and not necessarily very fancy looking restaurant, both the food and presentation were top quality! We enjoyed the pork trio and the bison carpaccio to start, food took a while to come out of the kitchen but it was worth the wait! Really delicious and perfectly seasoned! For mains we had the lamb and the beef tenderloin both were amazing! Great wine selection and service was quite impeccable. Overall truly impressed, this is a gem in edmonton that we can't wait to get back to!
Solstice is a welcome addition to the Edmonton restraint scene. The creativity with the food doesn't leave it lacking in flavour. For example: the tomato salad. You could go somewhere else and get your average caprese salad (which you could make at home with no skill whatsoever), or at Solstice it includes the most flavourful tomato sorbet, a basil gel and a lettuce velouté. We also ate the wild boar cheek, the beef tenderloin and the smoked pork hock and were not disappointed. Yes, it's a bit expensive, but it's worth the delicious creativity and great service.
This was our first visit to the restaurant. We were celebrating my husband's birthday and really enjoyed the romantic atmosphere. The food was exceptional, the service superb (there when we needed them, not when we didn't) and the overall experience made for a great night out. Thanks. We will return.
Second time eating at Solstice, not looking for a speedy meal, but 60 minutes between first and second course seems excessive. Prices in range with other similar restaurants. Maybe they should look into RevPash, we will be trying other restaurants before heading back.
Lovely evening with family. The food was outstanding and beautifully prepared. Our server was helpful and kind. It was a bit noisy but it may have just been the group of people there that night.
