Sushi Monger is a great little Japanese shop located in the walk arcade between Bourke and little Collins street.. the Udon combo was pretty good which came with one bowl of beef udon soup with any sushi roll.. this place is always full people.. but I came in for a late lunch so the queue moved along quite fast.. although I knew that they are famous for their don and bento but I was cravings for a bowl of hot noodle soup in this cold winter weather so I gave the udon a go.. the salmon sushi tasted fresh, the udon was not too big, and the soup very light, however there wasn’t much meat inside.. but this combo definitely was enough to fill me up.. Got to this place for lunch upon the recommendation of a local friend of mine. An unbelievable crowd but the staff did incredibly well to manage it and send the queue fast. Got myself the oyako Don(spicy) and a teriyaki chicken handroll.A really good deal for 12/ in the CBD. The oyako don is totally sufficient for 9.50,just being cash as they accept cards for only above 12. The sushi was quite alright, goes well with the pickled ginger on the side. The oyako Don is a gooey chicken covering steamed rice. Quite a filling dish and good value for money. It's open only 5 days for 5 hours, so they know to keep their customers on their heels!
Please note that only cash payments are accepted for transactions under $12 at this restaurant. I enjoy supporting family-owned businesses, and this Japanese sushi restaurant fits the bill perfectly. I especially enjoyed the sushi rice bowl, although I wish there was more salmon. The flavors of all the dishes were excellent, particularly the mushrooms. I also ordered some sushi rolls for my partner, which were satisfying. The affordability of the menu explains the long queue. Being located next to David Jones, I will definitely be returning to this restaurant.
Lizzie’s first impression: Literally the cheapest sushi you can find in Melbourne. Never have I come here at lunch time and not had to line up to buy. <br/ <br/ Lizzie enjoyed: The sushis here are fantastic their most popular one is the spicy salmon which is amazing (for takeaway sushi). I ordered the salmon and tuna mix chirashi zushi, which came with rice, a bed of salad, egg rolls, and mushrooms. The standout feature of this dish was the sauce that was drizzled over the rice and salad, a blend of soy sauce and vinegar, I believe. The portions of salmon and tuna sashimi were on the smaller side, but considering the price I paid, I couldn't really complain. The taste was decent. Overall, I had a pleasant and satisfying quick lunch here.
I really like this place for cheap eats on the go before class. It’s fast, simple and yummy. Try the King Prawn roll and the Spicy Salmon. <br/ <br/ You will always see a line of people queuing out of the place especially during lunch time. <br/ <br/ I like that they also give you miso along with the rolls that help make the meal a lot nicer and yummier.
This restaurant is a great option for a light lunch or a more filling meal. It can be challenging to find a seat here, so if you prefer dining in, it's best to arrive by 12 or after 2pm. The food is delicious, and if you order something simple like sushi rolls and eat in, they will even slice them up for you, a service that is not common these days.
