Went for a birthday dinner. Service is excellent. As mentioned by others restaurant is very dated. Surf and Turf - The lobster tail was excellent but the steak was just OK. Not much flavour and not as tender as it should have been.Lamb - Very goodOne person walked around and was hovering over the servers. I felt uncomfortable for them because this guy was always on their tail. This did not seem necessary. The person who hovered (owner?) visited and chatted with some people and he ignored others. Wonder why? If you want glitz, glamour, chrome and lots of windows with snooty servers....do not come here. If you want a consistently great steak and super service, this is the place for you. We have been going to the Blue Mermaid for more than 20 years. This family operated business runs a tight ship and it shows in the cuisine and the professionalism of the staff. My wife and I moved to Niagara about 4 years ago and quickly realized that good seafood restaurants are in very short supply. We were tired of the chains and looking for something different. We were referred to the Blue Mermaid by a colleague :-)It is a bit hidden right next to the St. Catharines Farmer's Market. In talking with the head server, they have been there for 40+ years.The ambiance was a little old school, and quite charming. The service was impeccable. The food quality was incredible! We made reservations for dinnertime on a Wednesday evening since they were recommended but there were literally two other occupied tables in the entire dining area the whole time we were there, which seemed a bit strange. Anyway, the service is top-notch and was prompt, as we would have expected with hardly any other customers there. I had the orange roughy which was most excellent, and done perfectly, and my wife had the shellfish platter, but with that, the flavor was great but the shrimp were overdone. Overall this is a nice place with good food and a formal atmosphere but also expensive enough that we thought it overpriced, and I don't think we would go back.
We spoiled ourselves last night with a dinner at the Mermaid. We were not disappointed. A nice bottle of Chardonnay, grilled calamari and jumbo shrimp cocktail followed by baked Canadian pickerel with capers and a Greek salad on the side. Completed the feast with Cherries Jubilee. Very attentive and friendly service made it a very pleasant experience!
If you love seafood you cannot go wrong with the Blue Mermaid, they do everything seafood to fulfill all that you desire. If you have room for dessert their Cherry Jubilee is outstanding! Service is exquisite.
Drink menu resembles the 70s and the food is fantastic. The waiters wear black and white . Piano bar downstairs. very friendly staff. Overstuffed furniture downstairs and a menu as well.
Great food, great service,more at time! Nice quiet dining room where we could have conversation. More relaxed lounge with more casual menu option downstairs. Can't wait to get back!
The food is just average and the atmosphere a bit stale and tired. If I went I would eat in lounge and do a simple meal to ensure value and quality.
