Just about the grubbiest room we’ve ever stayed in! The pub displays 4 star AA and Visit England signs even though it’s no longer listed with either organisation and having stayed there, I can see why! Immediately outside the front door of our room, there was litter, big weeds and cobwebs on the door frame. Things didn’t improve inside. It was a bit like going back to the 80’s, probably the last time someone properly cleaned the room as well. Mouldy blind in the window, dingey lighting from 3 old fashioned wooden wall lamps with shades that were covered in dust and cobwebs. It 's a country pub, not The Ritz so enjoy what it is, not what it 's not!!! We had a fantastic stay here for a couple of nights. Great pub food but don 't expect a tasting menu. There was a very friendly atmosphere in the pub, but if you 're the sort of person who doesn 't like dogs, you probably won 't like the place ! The room 's facilities might need updating etc but if you criticise this, then you 're missing the point 'cus it 's a 14th century country pub, not Claridges! My wife and I have visited this restaurant multiple times, and she has been even more often. This place is exactly what you would expect from a typical country pub. They offer a nice selection of real ales such as Brocket Bitter and Sharp's Doom Bar. The bar food is simple, reasonably priced (for a country pub in Hertfordshire), and usually well-prepared. They also have a slightly pricier restaurant, although I have not tried it yet. The area around the restaurant boasts some lovely walks, including visits to a few charming churches and Shaw's Corner. I would definitely recommend stopping by for a couple of drinks.
This is my favorite British pub of all time. It is a fantastic countryside pub with a long history, serving delicious hand-pulled ales and great food. The large fireplace with bench seats is the ideal spot to drink their amazing ales on cold nights. It doesn't get any better than this for a countryside pub. Stayed here for four nights whilst working nearby. The room was clean and the ensuite bathroom had a bath with a shower over it. Breakfast was serve yourself cereal, toast, fruit and yoghurt. Sadly this was a very poor experience. The pub is extremely cluttered and feels very dated. The accommodation is more like workers accommodation with prices of a nice pub. I the room was cold and cluttered and warned out. Rooms: 1 Service: 1 Location: 3
Lovely roast dinner, everthing fresh veggies not overcooked, roast potatoes were gorgeous in fact I would have been happy to just have a plate on their own. Service: 5
