Salt Sping has more places to eat per capita than any place I know, at least as far as permanent residents go. And they've all been thoroughly reviewed, except this place, so when my wife and I had to come to SS (from Brentwood Bay) for a day I figured we'd give it a go, so others would have more than one opinion to go on. All I can figure is that SS residents are keeping it a secret. It's in the clubhouse of the local golf club, about two minutes out of Ganges. This is a small but excellent alternative on Salt spring Island that should not be overlooked. Part of the Salt Spring Island Golf and Country Club, the restaurant is open for simple breakfasts, all the way through prime rib dinners on the weekends. Great standards like grilled cheese sandwiches, a truly decent burger and an extremely tasty Caesar Salad means there is something for everyone. This simple establishment also boasts one of the last "hot dog machines" (a little carousel behind glass that rotates the dogs at a suitable temperature) on the island - great for a really fast meal! The food here was tasty and reasonably priced, with a lovely view of the course to boot if you sit on the patio. The only thing that could have been improved was the service. This may have been because between our being seated, handed menus, served, and receiving our bills we never saw the same person twice, so perhaps there was some breakdown in communication. The gal who gave us our bills was quite friendly, but during the meal we felt a bit ignored out on the patio. I had to search for my own napkin and go without more water when no one came to check on us. All told, though, the food was fine and I would still return.
The food at this restaurant was delicious and budget-friendly, offering a stunning view of the golf course from the terrace. The only area for improvement was the service. It seemed that there may have been a communication issue as we never saw the same server twice, from taking our orders to receiving our bills. Although the server who presented our bills was friendly, we felt slightly neglected during our meal on the terrace. I had to fetch my own napkin and go without water as nobody came to refill our glasses. Despite this, everyone enjoyed the food and I would definitely come back again.
I used to visit this restaurant as a new local spot, but it has now become a disappointing experience. The server is rude and ignores customers for a long time before bringing water and a menu. The food used to make up for the poor service, but now everything tastes freezer-burned and of low quality. I will not be returning, and it seems like other locals have also been let down.
