We live 2.5 hrs away, was in town overnight with my son for his athletic event. Saw good reviews so got takeout to bring back to the hotel. My son was so happy with his lunch he wanted to go back a few hours later for dinner. I agreed it was awesome, but convinced him to try a burger place instead. Made a deal to go back the next day before leaving town, this time we ate at the one, long picnic table inside. Staff and owner could not have been nicer on both occasions. If you go here you won't regret it. The food is excellent reminds me of what you can get in the South and Midwest. Service is erratic in the late afternoon. The owners work extremely long shifts and sometimes get tired. So it says open till 6:30 p.m. on the website but if you show up at 6 p.m. you may find they closed 20 minutes earlier. So try to call in advance and see what's going on. The atmosphere is authentic family enterprise but don't be expecting anything fancy. Once you're inside the service is great I docked one star because of the uncertain closing time. The owner is really proud of her baked beans and she has every right to be they are fantastic.
On the downside, the restaurant is quite small, with only a few picnic tables for seating. If you're lucky enough to snag a spot, you’ll likely be sharing a table with others. If I could suggest one change to the ownership, it would be to find a slightly larger space. It doesn’t need to be huge, but a bit more room would certainly enhance the dining experience. With so many vacant storefronts in Schenectady, I’m sure there’s an opportunity to find a more suitable location. As for parking, it tends to be quite limited around the restaurant, which is another reason I think they should consider relocating.
If you’re in the area you cannot miss this place. I had the burnt ends, sweet potatoes, and Mac and cheese with the white sauce. This has been the best meal that I have had in the area!
